Is there a way to not have transport play when slaved?(EA-1)

Post by MadPsyance »

Hello folks!

I have my Electribe EA-1 slaved to my MPC, and I got it to do program changes to the EA, but what I don't want it to do is play the sequence that's already on that pattern, I just want to use the sound and sequence it externally...is this possible?

I know the obvious answer is to just delete the pattern data, but I'd like to keep the pattern data for now..and besides, it seems like there should be an easy way not to have the transport play as well.

Thanks!

I'm guessing the settings need to be made are on the MPC? it's been a while since I read one topic like this. There was something like turning off the note data sending from the MPC. I just forgot the terminology used on the MPC check the track options on the MPC you might find it there. Maybe you can also get better answers on the MPC forum. Sorry can't help much just tryin what i can. :)

Lol, I found the answer in the MPC manual.

This is for anyone who searches the forum for this answer:

In MPC: Mode-MIDI/SYNC(PAD 9)--SYNC TAB(F2)--SYNC OUT:OFF

Simple as that!

Thanks anyway Silverfilter!

Hey MadPsyance, nice topic =)

How did you get the MPC to send program changes to the EA?

Im have an MPC500 and EA MkII and would like to know how to do this, thanks =)

A little trickier than it should be.

I have no idea how different the 500 is from the 1000, but here's how you do it on the 1000:

In the sequence: set Type to MIDI and Program to OFF. Set MIDI to the correct channel the EA is receiving.

Go into STEP EDIT mode. Insert 2 CTRL CHANGE messages and 1 PRG CHANGE MESSAGE at 001.01.00 (assuming you want the program to change at the beginning of the sequence.

Go back to VIEW:ALL EVENTS screen, it just makes it easier to see your cc events and program change events at once.
Set the first CC to 0-BANK MSB, and the second CC to 32: BANK LSB....don't worry about the program change event just yet.

If you want to trigger patch A.01-B.64 on the EA:

Set 0-BANK MSB to 0
Set 32-BANK LSB to 0
Set Program Change to 1-128 (whatever pattern you want to use)
(For example: 1-64=a01 to a64...65-128 = b01-b64)

If you want to trigger patch C.01-D.64 on the EA:

Set 0-BANK MSB to 0
Set 32-BANK LSB to 1
Set the Program Change to 1-128 (whatever pattern you want to use)
(For example: 1-64=c01 to c64.....65-128=d01-d64)

It's really not that hard once you get the hang of it.
The only issue I've come up with is that the EA takes about a second to switch programs. which means you have to have the program change on the previous pattern somewhere toward the end if you plan on it starting right at the beginning of the next pattern...and the previous pattern can't have note data up until the end of the pattern or the transition between patterns will be obvious...and if there's a difference of delay settings the transition will sound..well you know how that sounds.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but post replies were being regarded as spam!
Hope this helps a little!

Ok, I thought of a way to have the program change not be such a big issue..way off topic I know, but it might help you out Jaymz...
Basically you have to have your MPC send transport control messages as well as program changes. (To do this, in the MPC, go to MODE-MIDI/SYNC and turn sync out to :AB.) Then do the program change before the pattern starts.

So, this is basically the exact OPPOSITE of what I was trying to achieve in my original post. It's almost a conundrum to the mind to have to chose between A)just using program changes and have to deal with the lag...and B) using program change+transport control and have to delete any note data for that pattern in the ea-1. Hmmm...

All things considered, it looks like I might have to keep transport control on after all, then at least there won't be any mess between program changes. Program changes would behave just as they do as if you were sequencing pattern in song mode or just changing patterns on the fly...they only change after the current pattern is done playing. ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT THIS: YOU CAN RECORD MOTION SEQUENCE DATA BECAUSE IT IS TIED TO THE SEQUENCE!!! So basically notes are triggered with the mpc, and as long as the EA-1 transport is movin' you can play motion sequence data(just hit record to record it).

This is what I'll probably end up doing: dump all midi data into my computer....then go through every pattern in the EA-1 and delete all sequencer data. That way I'll have 256 possible patches to play around with and not have to worry about note being in there and messing with the notes I'm trying to sequence with the MPC.

So transport playing while slaved it remains. More pro's than con's so there you go. Sorry for the ramble, but this might help someone someday.
