10 CP80 Programs for your pleasure and use

Dear Colleagues,

Please find below a link to a PCG file you can download and use. It contains 10 CP80 emulation programs free for your pleasure and use. They install by default into U-A; and they are totally based on the OASYS internal CP80 multisample - that is - there is no other sampling going on and no samples to load.

I happen to believe that the OASYS internal CP80 multisample is very respectable. It seems to only appear in the GM program set and hence has been virtually over looked.

However, in trying out Clavia's Nord Electro and Stage; I found the OASYS CP80 to be honestly far superior - in fact the Nord CP80 is absolutely dreadful - among the worst I have ever tried (and indeed their acoustic piano is equally bad - it amazes me that the instrument has such a reputation and I put it down to the fact that they make a big deal in advertising it as a stage piano). In any case, I find the OASYS internal CP80 multisample to be quite respectable. I own some of the top end CP80 software emulations and this multisample holds its own - especially when compared to AraldFX GrandElectrix Yamaha CP70 Emulation.

With respect to Karo CP80 which is excellent (although a few of the Karo programs reveal the layering too clearly to be useful in solo playing), I felt it worthwhile to create some programs based on internal CP80 because it takes up no more RAM. Hence the 10 programs in the PCG file provided.

I have made these main modifications to the GM program:
- Improved the velocity response to amplifier and filter (results in overall program levels to be a little low but there’s a lot of velocity response!)
- Improved the key-scaling (the GM program sustains infinitely in the bass end)
- Added an O-Very with incredibly short reverb time to emulate a piano 'chamber'. This is a subtle effect but adds a little body to the sound and gives it a little space
- Added a little amp drive to give the programs a little edge

Of course you should always audition/play electronic sample pianos at a lower than usual level in headphones in particular to give a little separation and allow the sound to acquire a little context.

Note then that various programs have different EQing. Two have tremolo and one of those allows you to adjust the depth and rate on knobs 7,8. Two programs have a second huge reverb (I like reverb!!)

Overall I'm quite happy with these programs and feel they are respectable up-front and solo or in a mix. The programs at least act as useful starting points and can then be tweaked according to needs in individual pieces.

Completely agree about the Nord. I bought a Nord stage on its release, the weighted action was awful and the sounds were pretty much as you describe. Fortunately The dealer took it back and by that point I had enough cash to pay the difference for an Oasys. WooHoo
