in the course of human events, i ended up with a korg microkorg
initially i was adverse to the mini keys, but have come to really appreciate them for synth and virtual instruments
however, i did try selling the korg to get a dedicated keyboard controller, but too many guitar crazy cowboys in arizona to bite
so i have decided to keep the korg and get a dedicated controller and got a good deal on a evolution uc-33e
it is supported by cakewalk, ableton and propellerheads so i feel the virtual instruments and plug-ins aspects are covered
what i'm curious about is how to hook the uc-33e and the microkorg up to work together, the instructions in the evolution uc-33e user's manual aren't exactly clear...
uc-33e usb to computer then uc-33e midi i/o's to microkorg midi i/o's then microkorg midi thru to soundcard midi in? is that it?
will this give the uc-33e control over the microkorg's sound module?
Korg microKORG and Evolution UC-33e hook-up question

you should be able to power the uc-33e by an external power adaptor.
from there you should connect the MIDI out of that to the MIDI In of the MicroKorg.
that will allow you to control the microkorg with the uc-33e.
hook it up to the USB will provide power so you don't need an adaptor, and would allow you to use the uc-33e with software programs, and I think possibly allow you to route MIDI from the computer to the microkorg.
if you connect the microkorg's MIDI Out to the uc-33e's MIDI In then you will be able to use the microkorg and uc device to control software and plugins...
you shouldn't need to connect to the sound card as I believe the uc-33e is behaving as the USB/MIDI IO Device here...

i should be seeing the uc-33e this week
the uc-33e has usb as well as midi in and midi out
the microkorg has midi in, midi out and midi thru
the first thing i'm going to try is:
uc-33e usb to computer then uc-33e midi i/o's to microkorg midi i/o's then microkorg midi thru to soundcard midi in
and see it that works, if not i'll try your suggestion

point is....
this:
"uc-33e usb to computer then uc-33e midi i/o's to microkorg midi i/o's then microkorg midi thru to soundcard midi in "
sounds wrong to me...
if the uc-33e is acting as a USB/MIDI interface, then you don't need to hook the MIDI-Thru to the soundcard... because that is just anoter option of getting MIDI into the computer...
so you can imagine, in that setup, you have the following
1. MIDI out from uc-33e into computer via USB
2. MIDI from uc-33e's MIDI In port, routed to computer VIA USB (Basically microkorg into PC)
3. MIDI out from uc-33e into PC's sound card MIDI Input (Via MicroKorg MIDI Thru)
so 1. and 3. are both doing the same thing, making 3. obselete because uc-33e does 1. and 2.
edit:
just to be clear - a MIDI Thru port is just a repeat output of whatever arrives at the MIDI In port, it is used for chaining devices e.g. controller keyboard > module > module > module. the modules can't talk to eachother, but they all recieve the output from the keyboard (or it could be a PC, a hardware sequencer, a keyboard workstation.. etc)

i see your point...
that's good because i see a pad controller like the akai mpd24 in my future and i could use the sound card midi i/o's for that
can't wait to get the evolution uc-33e
i just ordered cakewalk synthesizers: from presets to power user
that microkorg and the uc-33e are going to get a workout
then someday i want to get a 49 "full sized" key virtual analog synth
