Twitter as music promo

Post by georgeinar »

Since last saturday when my sister got me going in twitter, I now have 500 people following me and i'm getting between 10 and 20 downloads a day due to my posting a quick link to download a song for free. I'm doing this just to get recognized more as I don't play live at all and I've been just doing the forums here and some of the indie artist sites, but now I can promote myself for free on twitter and many more people already are getting familiar with my music. Hopefully this will bolster my sales thru cdbaby and itunes. If anyone has questions about how to twitter or why, ask away. It's a bit hard to explain. I spent over an hour on the phone w my sister learning all the inside tricks to get a good group following but I can see what I can do to help anyone else trying to promote their music online.

I would say, to start with go to twitter.com and sign up and click on stuff. My name there is 2loose_buzzgoth, so you can "find people" and find me then click on follow and then whenever I post a short msg or 'tweet' then you'll see it on your profile. I think it's only 160 characters or something is the max. I've been running into music bus people, pro studios, talent scouts, music bloggers, right now I follow anyone that is remotely interesting. Also, if you want you can sign up, find me, click on the list of ppl I'm following and either click on a bunch of them, or as you go you can read their profiles and some don't put anything to speak of in their profile, but others at least claim to be either artists, or other bus people, or once you get more into it I'll show you how to do searches and you could search anyone who has 'tweeted' the word jazz or something and then you can follow them. I have found that many many people whom you follow will reciprocate and follow you as well, so while you can't make others follow you directly, you can follow whoever you want, most dont' require any sort of permission to follow so you just click away when you have time. Also there's a few spots where you can follow an organized group whose puprpose it is to help you get tons of people following you. Also, if you get some dorks following you that you don't like their tweets, you can unfollow them and you won't see their jabbers anymore, esp if it's straight up spamming. But people are promoting their businesses as well as their own personal trivia so you get what you get. I met already the drummer from Slick Idiot and he said my song Hollywood Whore reminds him of his Waxtrax days, which of course is also KMFDM and Ministry and other cool industrial bands and he forwarded my video link to the singer of KMFDM and said he wants me to open for him when his cd is finished, like that's gonna happen, I don't even have a band. Anyway, if you're interested just go in there and familiarize yourself and I'll help you with your questions as they come up.

after you get familiar with twitter and have some followers and are following some people, check out tweetdeck, this opens up more possibilities and allows you to do some more interesting things and it's easier than figuring out how to do certain things

http://www.tweetdeck.com/beta

i do most of my stuff thru tweetdeck, esp you can search all tweets for words, for instance, electronica, or m3 and any tweets from anyone that contains those words will pop up and you can follow anyone there who looks interesting or whom you think might like your brand of music, or you could search on dj or music studio and meet other studio producers, etc etc.

I'm just now reading this.

I'm wondering if I'll have the time needed to persue this, is it real time consuming?
:?:

It's spring, the band is breaking in a new singer, and maybe a new identity, I have tons of work on, and around the house, then there's the OSAM, etc...so I'm wondering if now is the time for me to take on anything that needs my time.
:?
How much time do you spend?

well, i must admit it is addicting, but i think once you get going it could be even 15 mins a day to scan thru your messages and write a few tweets, maybe send a link to one of your songs for free download or whatever you're promoting. It takes some time to learn though, and I had to spend about an hour on the phone with my sister to learn the tweet deck part, but that makes twitter much more interesting. If you want to expand your internet outreach, then you should check it out, if that's not a priority right now, maybe wait then.

I probably need to do that, but I don't want to forget about it completely, it would be great if you could just keep us in the loop, as to how it's going for you, and such, if you wouldn't mind.

I'm behind the chain saw today cutting back some shrubs so the concrete crew can come in and make a mess...I mean...pour a new driveway, :P
it's a hundred feet long, and they're tearing the old blacktop drive out.
Just a sample of the things going on right now, that are taking a lot of my time.

Thanks George, and best of luck twittering.
:D

It'll catch on, just takes time, you deserve to get some more reward from the great music you produce, I wish you all the best.
