Awesome Dream Theater Combis

Post by MrT-Man »

This was posted on the Karma Lab forums, but in case anyone missed it, I thought I'd post it here as well. It's a really amazing set of programs and combis created by a guy in a Dream Theater cover band, who very graciously decided to share them.

Even if you're not a Dream Theater fan, there's some great lead synth sounds in there. I could play the Lines in the Sand combi, with the sampled background pad, for hours! & if you are a Dream Theater fn, you'll be all the more impressed -- you can switch through the Combis in order & play along, and he's got all the patches perfectly programmed.

There's samples in there, so you have to have a bit of sample ram available.

Could you provide the URL to where the combis are?

Note also that the URL above is faulty.

Did all the samples load properly on your Oasys? I had enough memory left but some of the sounds using DT-samples did not play at all (program-mode). Any suggestions? :?

A quite unusual thing is how the combis are spread over 9 (!) banks. I knew Ruddess uses lot's of Combi-space. But now I know why the Oasys has so many combi-banks - they are all for Ruddess!

some of the samples (mostly Kurzweil patches) couldn´t be included due to copyright

the combis aren´t randomly spread, each Dream Theater album has its own bank, pretty efficient

I notice that the samples for the begining of "Overture" aren't there.
So i loked at the programs that made that combi, and 2 of them are missing the samples.
The rest of the combis are very nice indeed. The pads, strings and solo sounds are amazing!

To be honest: I don't think the Combis sound that great if you play them "alone". But I know they sound excellent in the context of a DT-performance. And that I believe to be one of the keys for good sound design: don't create a "show-sound", that blows you away if played alone. Create sounds that fit in a mix and enhance the music.

I stumbled over this once Peter M. Mahr shared his Blogasys sounds. Of course there are some "show-sounds" in his collection as well. But the majority sounds "normal". When I realized how he uses them in a mix I started to understand and appreciate their real potential.

I meant the whole collection of Peter's sounds. It is (was?) available via his blog and consisted of programs and some combis.

@Peter: wenn ich mal was g'lernt hab, dann teile ich es auch gerne mit anderen. Und ein Folgefile wäre ... LEIWAND! 8)

I guess Charlie is referring to that posting in January 2008:

But a lot has changed within the last months....
