Is there a problem with the samples for pianos EXi2?

Post by knudar »

Hello.
I resent discovered an odd thing while playing piano on my 88.
There is a difference in the sound between F4 and F#4/G4/G#4.
The F4 sounds like the most of the key's.
When I use some force in the F, it sounds like the hammer is hitting the string in the piano. However, if I do the exact same thing on the F#4-G4-G#4, it sounds like the hitsound is muted.. I'm not sure how to explane this, but i feel the sound is not right.
If you have wraped a towel around the F#4, it would probably have sound the same as the difference between F4-F#4.
Is it me, or are there any of you guys there is experiencing the same too :?:
I've tried to measure the velocity in the sequencer, and by most the F4=127 and the F#4=122.
But this doesnt seem to happen each time. And I don't recognize this problem when using other pianosamples than the EXi2 :?

If this seems to be the case for every black note, then it may be an aftertouch issue. There are 2 aftertouch bars on an 88 one for white keys, one for black.

Maybe the hardware gain / sensitivity control in the aftertouch circuit is slightly different on the black keys giving you these differences in sound. This isn't something you can change via menu's and software, it's a hardware tweak on a circuit board.

Just a thought............... :?:

You will always get defects with sampled sounds. Yes, I hear the problem you have and i can hear other anomilies too. I also have a digital Yamaha P140 piano and it's piano sample, too, has incongruencies. Hell man, even my $20K Yamaha grand C1 has sound inconsistencies.

You want perfection? I think a mathematical computated sound design will be your best bet...the roland V-Piano ( from what i hear of the demo's on the net) sounds remarkable. Probably not perfect, but still a remarkable sound. Sounds very concise to me, no fluctuations in sound...although i thought the bass end sounded a little thin...maybe that was just the recording though?

Hi.
It's not my intention to gain perfection, but I was very suprised to hear such difference in sound on a instrument with this pricetag.
I have not experienced this before, neither with my Triton Extreme nor my Kurz.
If there is any of you having this abnormallity, I would be happy to know

I'm pretty sure its the same F/F# as the one that randomly plays at full volume (i.e. you don't hit the note, its just there). I'm surprised you haven't come across that one yet. I wonder if the two issues are related?

I'm not sure if I understand what you are talking about.
The issue occures only at high velocity attack and it is a remarkable difference between F and F#. In my ears it sounds like the last of the four samples that should be on the top velocity arent the same, or for that sake, not sampled from the same instrument(piano).
This does not occur in gm and other EXi's than the EXi2.
I've owned some instruments in my 20 years as an musician, but never heard this before.
