Controlling combis

Post by glenno »

Just acquired a TS, and slowly getting in command. I mainly play live, and having created some of my own combis, I wonder if there is a way of on/off switching of individual programmes that I haven't read about in the Basic Guide. Yes, I can do it on the mixing board, however I want it more immediate than that. Something like maybe assigning on/off for a strings channel to one of the SW1/SW2 switches? Or another clever way that experience has taught someone??

The TS is very frustrating for live playing if you want to control layers. You would think there would be simple technique to mute or unmute a Timbre, but no. The Status controls are the first thing you try, but they require two touches, which reduces the effectiveness. But it's even worse than that. If any notes are sounding, an attempt to change status between Int and Off will be ignored.

So you have to go to much deeper programming. See my thread from a few weeks ago "Switching off Timbres using SW2". It didn't work for me, but somebody else had better luck.

You can make modified versions of programs that use a knob to control their volume. Then you can set which timbre is controlled by the knob in Combi menu P3 / MIDI3 where you can enable a specific knob for each Timbre.

The downside of all these methods is that all the voices that you are not hearing are still using up polyphony. So you if make an 8 layer Combi and only use 1 or 2 Timbres at a time, you'll run out of voices pretty fast.

Thanks timg. I'd actually found the post "Switching off Timbres using SW2", however I couldn't get it to work, although I understand the theory of what is being attempted. What exactly is (P8-1/8-2) in Method 2. I ask this so I know that I understand it correctly. Everything else makes sense, and I can achieve it. I just want to know that I have set (P8-1/8-2) as you intend.
I might have a crack at Method 1, now that I have read it again, and can see what it intends.

I think P8-1/8-2 in the original article just means go to menu P8 and look at Tab 1 (Routing) (8-1) and Tab 2 (Insert FX) (8-2)

There is one more setting that is required to make this work, and is not mentioned in the original article. Go to Menu P4 (Edit Zone/ Ctrl), Tab "Controller". Under Panel Switch Assign, SW2 must be set to SW2 Mod CC#81.

Otherwise you can't use SW2 to control the gain of the Insert Effect.

I cracked it timg! Everything in method 2 is correct, with added comments. The trick is... to accept any changes while you mod Amt etc, you must release SW2 (if that's your chosen SW), and press it again to hear the changes. Until I discovered that, I was getting some weird reponses to changes I was making in Edit - Insert FX. And, no I haven't been working on it all this time. Been off on other little journeys in MOSS! :D
