Quick Help for a Newbie

Post by PathosMusic »

Hi Everyone!

I'm brand spankin' new to these forums in hopes of finding a solution for a sort of time-sensitive problem.

A good friend of mine (working musician) is currently in the recording stages for a new album, only this time he has a new keyboard. I believe its the Korg PA 500 or 800, i'll find out which for sure later.

He has all his songs setup on the keyboard obviously, but here is the problem. He wants to Multi-track record simultaneously from the keyboard to a DAW. I am very familiar with ProTools and Ableton Live for recording / editing, but am not too sure if this is possible with the limited outputs from the keyboard.

Someone mentioned a MIDI dump to the PC, which will then have all midi information for each seperate track?? And if so this is only information as far as i know, how can he get the sounds from his keyboard to actually play.

There is so much to look through here and I apologize for seeming "lazy" for not searching, but this is sort of important since he is in a session tomorrow :(

Thanks in advance.

That's right. You need to read the manual to see what the precedure for data dump transmission is for that particular keyboard. It's a very tricky process, because it's not the same with every kind of set up unfortunately. I know for fact that there are plenty devices out there that can't receive or send these kind of data. If your computer is set up to receive midi exclusive messages, you need to connect the midi out (keyboard) to the midi in of the midi interface (pro tools's hardware..sound card..etc ). Then you would have to read the manual to figure out how to dump the data ....

As far as multi-track recording, you have limited out puts on PA 800 for example. Not sure about the higher models. I can't remember if PA series have a "digital out put jack". Triton Studio has that ADAT optical jack. With that you can output up to 6 channels simultaneously. If not, you're gonna have to run traditional instrument cables to different inputs of your pro tools set up, and record 4 mono tracks at the same time.

PA2Xpro manual wrote:DIGITAL OUTPUT
Use this 48 kHz S/PDIF output to connect the
Pa2X to the S/PDIF input connector of another
digital device, like a digital mixer, audio card, or
stand-alone CD recorder. The same signal output
from the Left and Right connectors is sent by this
connector. See “S/PDIF Enable” on page 234 for
more information.

Looks like PA series don't have ADAT Optical out put. So, if all you have is a S/PIF then you are limited to 2 channels as oppose to 8 channels with Adat.
