midi on TR problem
hello, i have a question or two.... am i a idiot or its very complicated to load midi files o the TR?
i tried to load midi files thru the sd card to the sequencer and it sounds very bad like pianos making the drums etc... ( and even after GM inicialize ) sounds the same...
very frustrating having good midis that wen i load them on my yamaha mm6 they sound normal, but i pluged the usb cable to tr and played some midis thru the computer and they sound great with the TR engine..
now.. i did try to change the sounds of the midi file to the ones suitable and beter sounds of the TR but how do i save them?
i do need midi files for backing tracks but like this i cant do anything, please help

i've had the same problem. I probably don't have the right answer, but I'll tell you what I do (maybe someone else has an easier/correct solution).
I save the midi files I want to the SD card. Before heading over to the TR, I load the midi file into a player/editor where I can see what instruments are assigned to which tracks. Take some notes, then move to the TR.
On the TR in Sequencer mode, I select GM Initialize from the Utility menu. then load the midi file into the sequencer. Then listen and see how it sounds. I don't think the TR recognizes all the midi control commands from other standards (GS/XG??), so it's usually not good.
I then alter the voices on each track to where it sounds ok using my notes if necessary. I usually start with the GM programs, but may alter them to a suitable TR program/voice.
When happy I just save it as a song/sequence. I've mainly been doing it for drum & bass tracks, so it's not much work. It's tougher if there are many tracks used.
May not be right, but it's what i do.

Before asking for help, one should have attempted to do everything...
But I've realized that forum exist just for the people who aren't narrow minded, but instead are LAZY.
If you look for certain informations (although you can find them thoroughly reading the user's manual) you can consider also to look at KORG USA....
How do I remove Program Change events from a SMF on my TR?
and
How do I change the bank map from GM to Korg and back on my TR?

well michelet i did try to look in the manual and i did not find what i looking for, i ever had the impression that the TR had some kind a problem. i always had yamaha tried rolands and there is nothing more simple than loadind any kind of midi on them, just put the midi and press play.. voila, that simple
i never thougt that korg wood be so complicated on that matter ( basic stuff )
i made the question because of that, midi for me is load , press play, and mute tracks, and it was very strange for me that wen a use korg as midi interface on my pc it plays the midi files perfectly

well i got the same "problem" as you, i do need to play using Playback because i do symphonic arrangements, due it's my first synth i think is difficult to assign midi, also when i do that i save it as a song and when i load the file again the sounds seems to be lost, sso i must re arrange again every track.
man i'm so noob

MIDI on SD card issues
Well, I've read the manuals, tried everything just as it's printed and still nothing. This is a difficult machine at best in all areas. My friend's Rolands all operate the MIDI files I've given him just fine without any tweaking or major engineering. His Roland is Plug and Play in thi srespect and I'm really starting to regret my purchase.
I bought my TR88 over the Roland because the key action was perfect for a non-piano player like myself......clost to piano action but not quite as stiff so I went with this more expensive model.
Hoping to locate someone's posts who actually knows, has executed, and can explain step by step (with possible errors) how to load MIDI via the SD card.
Feeling like a 12 year old with a Ferrari.

JTToo, the previously posted link in the above message does not really apply to your question. Those instructions are for changing the MIDI sounds into the TR sounds.
However, I understand your problem because I have also experienced it.
I posted this a couple of months ago but still have not found a solution.

I'm still trying to figure it out.

Not sure if it will work this way or not, but to me it would sound reasonable that you first load in the SMF (standard midi file) and then change the instruments to make the file sound good. After this you should save your sequence as a .sng (SONG) file. And everytime you turn your board over you just load these sequences from your SD and your good to go. It takes a lot of work when you first time load the midi in, but after that you have it everytime...
Just Remember to save your song-files to the sd-card because they won't stay in TR's internal memory when you power down...
