How do I use the R3 as midi controller for another module?

Post by pwoznic »

Hey all, I'll admit I am very overwhelmed by this... I will eventually buy an axiom or something like that, but I have the following concern for now...

I bought an E-MU proformance 1+ module so that I can use it for piano sounds (since the R3) does not have them.

I would like to use the R3 to use the sounds of the E-MU. I'm connect from the MIDI out of the R3 into the MIDI in of the E-MU. I set both to the same MIDI channel.. and here is where I am stuck.

How do I access the sounds from the E-MU? I'm a technical writer by profession (lol) and I just can't understand the manual.

I have been searching all over the web, but understand, I'm a complete noobie when it comes to MIDI.

The MIDI won't carry any audio - it is a serial data interface, carrying only information such as 'note on', 'note off', 'controller change' and 'program change' messages, etc. so it allows you to control the module, but you will have to hook up the audio outputs of the module to a mixer or such.

as far as accessing the sounds on the module... generally from the R3 it would not be very easy because it is a standalone synth, and would be more suited to being controlled rather than controlling something else. A workstation would be a more suitable host.
but you don't have one... so....
changing program on the R3 should transmit a program change... change to program 4 on your R3 and the unit should change to program 4 too. bank changes are a bit different - the R3 technically has 2 banks, the different programs being grouped into sets for ease of use, but if you were to step through them, it would still go from 1-128. banks are mapped differently from manufacturer, so i guess you'd have to use any controls on the front of the module to change (I haven't looked up this particular module, sorry)

your main option at this point would be simply to mute the module when you don't want to use it, and unmute it when you are using it. (and then mute the R3)

I have the audio out of both the R3 and the EMU going to a mixer, then to my monitors. I've muted the R3 and am frantically pressing any damn button I can find on it, but still no sound from the module. :(

make sure that the R3's channel is the same as the module's. by default this is channel 1, but its best to make sure.

so if you were transmitting on ch#2, and the module were set to 1, you wouldn't hear anything (for example).

other than that, it should work. its probably something simple - its always something simple. there isn't that much to midi really.

That's what I'm thinking. I always screw something up and forget the little details. I'll take a break and see if I can figure this out tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. :D
