ES-1 Sample Trouble

Post by goblinlaird »

Hello fellow beatsmiths, got an ES-1 from a friend, and I've wrangled a SM card, but I'm running into some trouble...

a.) when I load samples from the SM card, there are no 1-9 banks to choose from. All I get is an "[E]" and then I load samples individually. I read on here that there's a "trick" to load more than the standard 100 samples via loading em onto separate .es1 banks, but where are they? how do I get to them?

b.) only two of the sample keys can load stereo samples...? say it ain't so!

a)I believe "E" stands for error, try cleaning the connectors on the smartmedia card gently with a T-shirt. And than retry.

b)Yup, only two stereo samples can be played at any one time.
Or you can resample and double em' up! But that would probably eat your memory up even quicker.

Thanks DJ Pound, what do you mean by doubling up?

The "[E]" is listed in the manual as what you select when you're loading a sample made on your computer. But as far as choosing to load to banks 1-9, they just don't show up. All I get is [E] and the 100 sample limit. Do I have to create the .es1 banks on the SM card?

Hmmm.....Did you initialize the SM card?

And when i said "double up", I just meant resampling.

Also what size is the smartmedia card that you are using?
I have a couple 32MB cards and they only have 8 banks each.
Also you might want to make sure that you're using 3.3v smartmedia cards.
Hope that helps!

yea, I still need to explore resampling.

I have a 32mb 3.3v SM card. I've formatted the card, load the wav's from my computer, and when I go to load from the card on the ES-1, its just [E]. Though I can load the samples, I can't choose which of these elusive banks to load onto.

Are the banks part of the sampler's internal memory or should they be on the SM card after you format?

sry, I have a feeling there is some glaring step I'm missing

Im pretty sure that you can only load one bank at a time.
If you try to load one bank over another that you may of just loaded...unfortunately all previous data will be erased

And yeah..the banks are part of the card and not the internal memory on the ES-1.
.....And the ES's internal memory is exactly 98.5 seconds. You can easily fit all sequences, sounds and global settings onto one bank on a SM card.

Im not familiar at all with loading waves though. Most everything I sample is either from vinyl or other various sources that i record directly into the ES and than immediately save on SM cards.

So I figured it out. I import my samples onto the internal memory, then save those samples back onto the card, which then allows me to select from 1-9 banks, and all the samples are then saved as one .es1 file. hmm I'm gonna play around a bit

NEW TROUBLE

Post by goblinlaird »

New issue with loading samples..

I load .wavs from smcard bank onto internal, jam and everything works fine, but once I turn the es1 off and on the samples have been mangled. Sounds from the smcard bank are chopped or bleed into each other (like instead of a snare hit it's now a glitched bass kick and a hi hat). I've tried this now three times and keep getting the same weird result.

Anybody else experienced/remedied this? ideas?
