How to operate best during live shows

Post by roryn1 »

Hello, I've got a Korg M50, and I bought it because the people on this forum recommended it for live shows. I'm having trouble with this though haha.

How can I switch between different sounds really fast? There's got to be a way that you can program it so it's just a click of a button.

Does anyone know of a good place to buy new sounds? Sounds that are used in the present pop/rock era?

Thanks

if you need to switch between sounds in a song, I put them all in a single combi and either mute/solo/unmute the sound I need or in some cases (especially if it's just a couple patches), I'll split the keyboard. I have 4 zones for Final Countdown for example and never have to change patches. Just mute/unmute once in a while.

Between songs, it's just a small sound "outage"

That's how I do it anyway...

As far as sounds go, I program my own if it doesn't already exist on the synth.
Current Korg Gear: KRONOS 88 (4GB), M50-73 (PS mod), RADIAS-73, Electribe MX, Triton Pro (MOSS, SCSI, CF, 64MB RAM), SQ-64, DVP-1, MEX-8000, MR-1, KAOSSilator, nanoKey, nanoKontrol, 3x nanoPad 2, 3x DS1H, 7x PS1, FC7 (yes Korg, NOT Yamaha).

Thats interesting McHale, im becoming an avid follower of your posts now..
You just said "I program my own sounds, if they dont exist on the synth" excuse me if its too dumb...How does one do that?
For example - i was able to tweak the Piano sounds a bit to match my liking (I can see thats the flexibility that a synth offers compared to an arranger for example), but how do you program new sounds altogether?

It seems like the ability to change sounds quick is one of the features people lack the most on this forum. There are some options, but I think they all have their flaws. The best would be to have a dedicated button to switch to a spesific patch. I just hope there will come a firmware upgrade where you can use the numberpad to change patches with a single click.

But for now here's a couple of options:

- Putting all combis in a spesific category, and use the category dropdown to access patches using the touch screen.

- Using a pedal configured to do patch up

- Using an external pedal board to send patch changed through midi.

- Using bank A-D for variants of the same combi (there is a video on this forum showing this).

I've battled this since I started playing keyboards in bands, many years ago.
I just put all my sounds in Combination bank A, and just scroll from one to the other, my buttons are getting unresponsive, just as they did on my KARMA, so the scroll wheel is my friend now.

Like McHale, I create my own patches in Combi mode, and have yet to get stumped, but I must admit, my band is pretty Middle Of The Road, so I never need anything too far out.

Awesome! I'll have to learn how to do combi.
I also don't know how to make new sounds instead of just tweaking them a bit. How do you make totally new sounds?

I'm flattered, but want to point out that there are some real pros on here that are far more knowledgeable than me about this stuff. A lot of my ideas and info came from them. These forums have a wealth of info and everybody on here has their own little niche that they excel at. Mine just happens to be voiding my warranty and tearing stuff open to see how I can change it.

REAL easy. Change the waveforms. Open up a piano patch and change the piano waveforms to something like a SAW or a trumpet or bagpipes or... There's hundreds of waveforms to choose from. People often describe sounds as colors. You know how yellow mixed with blue will give you green? Well, a bright piano waveform plus a strings pad gives you a pretty much used 80's pad. Listen to sounds for the purpose of reproducing them and you'll start to see what makes up a sound. Piano and pipe organ? Strings and sqare wave? Triangle and timpani? The combinations are endless. Now you can mess with attack, decay, sustain, EQ, effects, etc. There's so much you can do with the M50. The interface is very logical and the touch screen makes it a breeze.

Remember, you can mess with any sound as much as you want when you "trial and error" sounds without hurting anything. Just don't save the patch when you're done. You'll learn what every setting is very quickly when you start playing with them.

What you *can't* do with the M50 is get waveforms from other sources; you need a keyboard with sampling (any mainline Triton, the TR or Triton LE with the sampling upgrade, or the M3) to do that. But still, with the waveforms on the TR, you've got a ton of options.

Only Roland's Fantom G can do that. If you need seamless switching you'll need to buy a 2nd M50!

The Triton Pro allows you to hold a chord in one patch, switch patches, and your chord will still be playing in the previous patch (minus it's effects). This is the one thing I miss about the Triton Pro.

Radias is nice.

I would go with something different. You already have a ROMpler, so a V/A., clonewheel, real analog, something different than your current technology would be my recommendation. If you can do everything with the M50, why get a 2nd? What CAN'T you do with the M50?

I'd like to have a keyboard that has more techno/pop sounding sounds on it that I don't have to fiddle with as much as you do with the m50
