Saving/Naming files on SD Card

Post by VIAL »

Whats to best way to name samples files on the sd card, obviously naming them in the KP3 Editor.
But if I have 4 types ov samples, and want them allocated to a specific sample bank....
Eg
Sample Bank A - Archive samples
Sample Bank B - Bass n Beats samples
Sample Bank C - Chaotic samples
Sample Bank D - Drones n Dub samples

Archive being samples from music cds with vocals....
so I have a sample I call for example ....SPK Violence 01, what do I name it for easy recall and saving to the sd card....
Lastly the sd card was formatted on the KP3 but it doesnt contain any branch folders...which the KP3 user guide says will be created???
Any help would be more than useful....

Korg have decided to use only numbers as file names.
So sample "120.bpm.salsa.wav" will be "01.wav" and so on..
The only file extensions you can use are .wav .aif & .kps
So you have 100 .wav files, 100 .aif files and 100.kps files.
But as the manual states:
NOTE In the case of WAVE files or AIFF files, the KP3 will recognize only file names consisting of a two-digit number plus filename extension, such as “00.wav” or “99.aif”. If both .wav and .aiff files with the same two-digit number exist, the WAVE file will take priority.
So you can only use 200 samples all together..

I'm a little confused about getting 200 samples on one card. How do you choose between the two types when loading from SD to the KP3?

You either load one of your 100 kps files (named 00-99) or one of your 100 wav/aif files (also named 00-99).

But remember:

Code: Select all

If both .wav and .aiff files with the same two-digit number exist, the WAVE file will take priority.
So in reality it can only read 200 file names since .wav cancels .aif out..

So when I turn on my KP3 it automatically loads the .kps files, then to load the wav files I hit load>all, which changes the samples I can load. Am I doing this right? Is there a way to switch back and forth between the two types of files?

What do the load>prog. and load>global functions do exactly?

When you turn the unit on it will load whatever you saved on ABCD, no matter if it is .kps .wav or .aif
It's when you load new samples to ABCD you have to specify what format you want to pick from..

Code: Select all

Loading from card
Here’s how to load previously-saved data
from the card.
1. Hold down the SHIFT button and press
the PROGRAM MEMORY 2 (LOAD) button.
2. Use the PROGRAM/BPM knob to select
the type of data that you want to load.
"SMP.A"-"SMP.D": Sample data
"Snd.A"-"Snd.D": WAVE, AIFF
"ProG": Contents of program memory
"ALL": All files
"GLOb": Global setting file
El Manual is a wise guy!

Code: Select all

"ProG": Contents of program memory
This contains data for eight program memories. The file name has an
extension of ".kpp".
"GLOb": Global setting file
This data consists of the Ext.Ctrl parameters and the global parameters.
The file name has an extension of ".kpg"
You can find out more if you open the KP editor on your computer, or talk to El Manual for the Editor. :wink:

^^^

thanks for breaking it down, iv only had mine for about a week. So what format are the sample data files in and can I convert WAV files to sample data on my computer and then load them to the kp3? or does sample data just come from incoming signals that you save to the KP3 in real time?

You can drop wave files on the card, but you got to drop them in the card's root, and the sample has to be 48 khz.
The best thing to do is to use the computer software called KP3 Editor, there you can preview and transfer the changed settings thru USB. Then everything should be ok.
There is a lot to wish for in the (probably not) upcoming update.

The raw signal can also be loaded, but that's when you sample t directly thru the RCA, oldschool stylee.

yea thats what iv been doing is just dropping them right to the card because with the kp3 editor you can only load 4 samples at a time right?

Yes, ABCD= 4 samples.
And the card can contain 00-99.kps, 00-99.wav and 00-99.aif for you to load to ABCD
