Post by Sharp »

Hi all.

Got some links to share, then pop them into this thread.

Here's some AKAI Info I was given.

MPK61 USB/MIDI Controller with 61 keys and MPC pads

Image

The MPK61 is a semi-weighted, five-octave keyboard controller with MPC pads and technologies. You can use this USB/MIDI controller with virtually all audio software including DAWs, sequencers, and the included Ableton Live Lite software.
The MPK61's Key Split feature enables you to access to two different programs from the keyboard. Its semi-weighted keys also empower you with aftertouch for complete creative expression. In addition to its capabilities as a keyboard controller, the MPK61 has a full MPC-style production section with 16 genuine MPC pads that are velocity and pressure sensitive. You can control up to 72 different parameters via 24 assignable Q-Link knobs, faders, and buttons as well as optional footswitches.

A selection of MPC technologies are also built into the MPK61. MPC Note Repeat enables the MPK to automatically perform a rhythm pattern, such as 16th notes, for accuracy and speed. MPC Swing, sometimes referred to as "the heart and soul of hip hop," turns perfectly aligned sequences into human-feeling time alignments. Hit the stage and perform with virtually any software on you Mac or PC or other MIDI instruments with the MPK61.

The World is clearly in a complete mess.

Virtually all innovation in music has ground to a hault. NAMM has essentially nothing to show for itself.

You can say that again.

Fair play to AKAI /Alesis / Numark (more or less the same company I believe) though. They seem to have a clear direction even in this recession and know what the people want.

Well, I kind of like the a-la-nanokeys midi laptop controller. It looks it has full keys. After having the nanoKeys in my hand, I find it very odd to use, since the feel is so weird. I'm accustomed to the full length white keys.

This one looks pretty neat. Wonder how much it will cost.

I've only just latched on to this thread, and was thinking it was a "lead-up" to Namm 09  , but I've just noticed that the whole thing is over! http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM09/coverage

...On keyboards (or anything really) Not a word from yamaha, Roland, Korg, nothing. Used to remember years ago when Both namms, and musis Messe in Germany were hugely popular, but IS IT really the recession? are Yamaha, Roland, Korg actually bothered anymore...... :?

I think that during Summer NAMM no one make big announce...
Usually, the most intense NAMM is the Winter one.
BTW, I hope some new generation workstation, too!
I would love some news for the M3, maybe freebies...!

That's seemingly the way it's going, and unfortunately I think it's a one-way ticket. The writing's on the wall - hardware (except for controllers) is nearly dead.

People are doing everything "in-the-box" thesedays. It's becoming less and less profitable to make anything that's not using a computer as the computer out-performs everything, and hardware costs so much to build yet still having significant inferior specifications (compared to computers), and thus external hardware has become second best.

Unfortunately I think we'll see a lot more controllers being released yet...

i think the idea of controllers is necessary to complement the development of software - it's just that EVERYTHING that's coming out these days is either a keyboard, a multi-pad, or, ever more commonly, a combination of both.

the problem i see is that, while there is so much sonic and compositional potential in software, our tools are still rather limited to either a keyboard with 12 keys per octave, or a plate of rubber pads we finger-drum with. there are some independent companies that come up with really interesting controllers (such as the lemur, body contact pieces, percussion controllers of different shapes and sizes) but they are expensive and hence not very accessible to a lot of musicians. it's a bit frustrating.
