RAnDomiZinG parts on the ESX (probably works on the MX to)

Post by magiskakomplex »

When I get bored and need some inspiration on rythms I love gear with some sort of random function.
I just found a way to randomize parts on the ESX :D.
Hidden under the move data function (shift+move data) you can select Move, Repeat or RANDOM.
What I like to do is set the pattern length to 8 and:

Hit the part i want to randomize
Hit [shift]+[step2/move data]
Turn the big dial so the display says "MoveData Random"
Hit [shift]+[step2/move data] - the part key and [step2/move data] should blink
Hit [shift]+[step2/move data]

Done! Now you can just hit play and listen what parts you like and so on.

I guess alot of people know this allready, but im sure there are lots of people out there who dont read manuals like me.

You are right- it is a great function and everyone should know about it.

Interesting. What exactly does it randomize? The notes? filters? effects? I guess I can try it and find out.

Ive only used to to randomize the steps so far. I know you can get it to randomize the effect motion sequence as well, but those knobs are just too much fun to twitch anyway :D.
The keyboard parts are a bit disappointing though. First you have to activate ie 5 steps then the Move Data function will just move those around randomly, it wont change the key or gate time.
Anyone know anything else fun you can do with the Move Data function?

This is great fun. On the EMX you can eg record any old sequence at any speed without caring to much about what is going in- put it back to your chosen speed, twiddle the knobs etc- then listen through the sequence for a bit you like. You can then switch off the notes around about it and use the move data function to move it to a part of the sequence you want.. a bit like triggering/ placing a sample. Alternatively you can move it to the start of the sequence, cut the pattern to one bar, then copy it to eight bars so that your good bit repeats.

I don't have a camera. If you ask about the bits you're not sure about- even if it's all of it- I'm sure we can help you out.

Yeah I just tried this the other day on my EMX. You can really come up with some cool results by accident with this feature!
I tryed it also on my ESX once a few weeks back, but noticed almost immediately that its not possible to randomize the "time slice" part.
**shucks** Oh well, it's still very useful, I agree.
