PA588 Notation display

Post by Carmen »

After checking the manuals I've found that the pa588 can display song lyrics. Can the pa588 display notation (Score) as well?

Several posts in this Forum Thread seem to indicate that a software update has enabled a Score View function. Unfortunately I can't tell if the information relates to the pa588

Any info on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm going to be replacing my current keyboard that goes with me when teaching students at their own homes.

Thanks ahead

Hello Carmen,

The Pa588 does not have the ability to display notation, only the Pa800/2XPro has that feature.

From your profile it appears that you teach vocal lessons, so why do you want to carry around such a big and heavy instrument to your students houses? You could get the Pa800 which is much easier to cart around and it includes a notation display. Then again, maybe you also teach piano so an 88 note weighted keyboard is necessary. I like my Pa588 very much but if all I needed was an 88 note keyboard to teach piano on, there are much lighter weight choices. Regarding the notation display, I don't think having notation displayed on a small LCD is going to be all that good for teaching anyway. Much better to stick to printed music that can be seen in its entirety and left with the student. Just my opinion.

Best Regards,

Dave

Thanks for your reply Dave.

I should answer a couple of those points that your brought up....they are actually quite relevant to how I teach.

1) In order to reduce the cost to my students I don't employ a human accompanist. Instead I record myself playing the accompaniment, and then the voice line (usually with a flute sound). After the song has been played and recorded into a Midi file I enter the lyrics using a computer and a Notation editor. The resulting file is then stored on a USB stick (or an SD card) and the file accessed when needed. This provides a great way to be able to focus on the students technique rather than focusing on playing the piece.

2) I do agree that the printed page is quite useful, however I teach 6 - 10 students per day. Each student is usually working on 4 - 6 pieces (or more if a competition or recital is coming up) My book bag alone usually weighs in at 25 pounds......reducing that would be very useful.

3) I prefer an 88 note weighted action keyboard to play on.....and I do teach piano as well, however I do require any piano students to have their own piano or weighted keyboard.

4) Currently I use a Yamaha DGX 620 for lessons at my students house. My studio is has an M3 and an RGP-800 Grand. The DGX does have a notation display and has so far worked relatively well. Unfortunately the unit is not designed ruggedly enough to properly handle being moved around as much as I do, nor deal with the abrupt temperature changes (-30 C outdoors into +20 C indoors and back again half an hour later) The display has recently started to develop vertical lines which obscure the information. So replacement time........I've really enjoyed the M3 and I like Korg's weighted keybeds so I was looking into the pa588 as an option.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Thanks again

Cheers
