PAX and broken buttons. Yes, again...with pictures.

Post by Wings »

The day before yesterday, tuesday the 1st of december, I did a gig for the phys. chall. group in my town. It is customary in Norway that most companies, schools, clubs, groups etc. throw a before-christmas party for it's members.
Anyways, midway in the gig my Start/Stop-button broke again. :?
So for the remainder of the gig it was all either midi or straight a-capella.

Previously I've seen other members with similare problems, and this time around when I fixed mine, I remembered to make detailed pictures of the ordeal, so with my pics. and explanation, it might be possible for other members to make this repair themselves. The fix should take approx. 1 hour.

IMPORTANT!!! I do not condole or incourage any type of hardware-repairs at home. The best thing is to use an authorized service-shop or dealer. And further more, I am NOT to be held responsible for any damage or malfunction as a result of attempted home-repairs. IMPORTANT!!!

Here's the procedure:

First; find a soft and flat surface (couch, bedspread, matress etc) and lay down the PAX face-down. For the main part of the procedure, the PAX will be laying face-down. Beware the joystick/pitch-bend so it doesn't become damaged.

Second; locate and unscrew all black screws underneath the PAX. All aside from the rubber-feet, ram/rom hatch, and a "smaller" one located at the far righthand corner. Locate and unscrew the two small screws locking down the floppy/cd-drive bay located underneath the bay-door.
No need to touch the two rows of "gold-like" screws. These are for loosening the keyboard-claviature. Same, no need to unscrew any screw in the rear.

Third; carefully flip the PAX rightside-up, keys facing you.
Now grab both plastic-ends (right+left) on the PAX and gently try to swing up and towards the rear (there are hinges along the rear edge). It might be sticking a bit, don't pry, just ease it gentle from side to side until it opens. Beware once it opens that you don't stretch any of the chords/flat-cables connecting the topside to the bottom.
After opening, tilt the PAX so that it rests firmly like a wide letter "V". This is to prevent all the knobs and buttons from falling out once you get to loosen the printcard.

Fourth; locate and loosen the framehold running lengthwise securing the printcards. I find it easier to loosen the screws (only 2 of them) on the plasticcover for the drivebay and leave the harness in place on the framehold, but this is a matter of pref.

Fifth; Use a magicmarker and mark all the free holes (that does NOT have a screw) in the correct printcard (to prevent confusion when reasembling) and then loosen all the screws (approx. 16'ish in the intro/ending/variation/fills/start-stop section) holding the printcard in place.

Sixth; Gently fall out the printcard just enough to locate the button that needs replacing or repairing. Beware that the button already mounted has a rubberpad underneath it. You will need to relocate this to your new button. (at least I did).

Last; observe the two clear plastic-feet on the button. These were too long on my replacement-button, so they needed to be cut for size. A pair of cutting-pliers or a scissor will do the trick. Just make sure not to cut them too short. These are the only thing preventing a premature failure in the button at a later stage.

Fix or replace the button and reverse this explanation. 8)

Great advice, Wings! I haven't had a problem with buttons so far (fingers crossed), not even in the almost nine years I've had my i30. Your post definitely should go into the "Stickies" section.
