Trinity Sounds and Korg R3 Sounds

Post by MusiKman »

Hi friends,

Well, this weekend we had a guy at church play a Korg R3 and we were blown away at how awesome that little board sounded. So full and rich, the pads were so awesome.

Well, I wondered if there is any way to replicate those vintage pads in the stock trinity. Thanks in advance.
Best,
Musikman

I guess that's one of those "how long is a ball of string?" type Q's. ;)

Not sure about the R3 (I don't have one), but the Radias programming is similar to Moss - in that they're both virtual analogues.

The main differences between the Radias and Moss on Trinity are the step/modulation sequencing, arpeggiation, the Unisaw oscillator, synth/drum PCMs, emulated tube-drive, Vocoder, and effects. Not to mention the Radias is multi-timbral. Actually the Radias is more akin to the Virus in terms of programming structure, but it somehow ends up sounding completely different to the Virus, an entirely different sound. More squeaky clean, less grunt.

The stock Trinity (without Moss) has amongst the lushest pads out there, though.

But the Radias/R3 and Trinity are fairly incomparable. You can't really emulate one with the other, and vice versa, as they don't really have definitive characteristics that you can latch on to and emulate, as it were. Hard to explain.

What was it you liked about the R3, what aspect did you want to emulate?

I think the Trinity's biggest weakness is its lack of an arpeggiator. It misses out on the realtime percussive loops that it could've otherwise been capable of. Would've been immense, unleashing an entirely new beast within. An arpeggiator completely transforms the standard programs.

Maybe try playing the Trinity via a different MIDI keyboard that has an arpeggiator?

Timo my friend, as always, you are the best! Thank you for taking the time to respond.

I really love the sound of the pads, sort of 80's sounding, really thick, and evolving. Really nice. It made me go through a lot of my pcgs, and search for similar sounds.

I found a couple of sounds that were similar. Like:

There is a pad called OBY,
another one called WAVESTATION, Holy Trinity, and others that I am putting together, and all these use the stock Trinity sound engine.

When I put it together, I will post it to share with everyone.

I really love the sound of the trinty. Now that I don't have any of the options except for the DI-TRI, I'm still amazed at how powerful the sound is. It truly still amazes me how beautiful and crisp the sound of the Trinity still is. Also thank goodness for Trinitro that really speeds up the setting up of the pcgs.

By the way, I just realized that once one sets up a custom PCG, pretty much, the combis get thrown off all the way. I guess you can't have both heh, custome patches, along with custom pcgs, especially if you're copying patches from other pcgs, which is what I am doing.

Anyway, thanks for your awesome detailed response. By the way, thank you TIMO for all your help in selling my Trinity's expansion boards. You were so instrumental. I got my telecaster and have been using it at church. That is how awesome the Trinity is, it paid for my Telecaster and I still have a Trinity. God bless Korg!
Best,
Musikman
