What would you reccomend for DAW software with the Oasys

Post by offshoretechman »

Hello,
I recently got my big O and I am familliar with the on board sequencer from having a triton studio in the past but looking for more options in a easy to use midi sequencer. Back in the day I used Dr. T's KCS and it was very easy to lay down midi tracks. I have been doing a trial on several software titles that allow you to download and try them but there is plenty of reading and setup involved. I'm not looking for any virtual instruments as I just want to use the sounds of the O, as of right now.
Another thing would be is how are you setting up the O for assigning midi channels for the software....
I'm new to all this newer tecnology software that is out today and looking for some tips on how you are setting your stuff up
Thanks

There are all kinds of good DAWs out there. Which one is best *for you* is something you can only decide by trying out a few of them and seeing what works. Yes, you actually have to do work if you want the best fit *for you*. There is no such thing as a 'best daw'. Each one is different and has its own strengths and weaknesses. Which one works best with the OASYS? A better quesion is which one works best with any hardware keyboard. There's nothing special about the OASYS that makes it require a different type of DAW from any other keyboard.

As for a particular title, you never said which OS you use. If you want a really cheap one, go with Reaper (think it's PC only). I use Cubase and recommend it; some other good options are Sonar, Logic (Mac only), and ProTools. There are more than that, but that's a list of the major ones.
Keyboard Rig: Korg Kronos, Moog Sub 37, Waldorf Blofeld Module, Neo Instruments Ventilator II, Moog MiniFooger Delay, Strymon BigSky, Roland KC-150, Mackie 802-VLZ4 Mixer

There is a learning curve with every Pro level computer software sequencer,
hence, no 'easy to use' app that fits that description IMHO. … AND with each revision there is usually more to learn due to added functionality.
You get what you pay for.

I have used Mark of the Unicorn's Digital Performer on a Mac for 20 years and I think it's the bomb. Other posters will undoubtedly chime in with their preferences.

Like anything else , the more time you put in with any given tool, the more
intuitive you'll become resulting in quicker realizations of your musical ideas.

Look at all of the Pro level software developers' products at a local store or at each individual website. Make sure that whatever you purchase
you'll like the way it looks as you'll be looking at it many hours at a time.
You won't know if you'll like how each one handles certain tasks until you spend a reasonable amount of time with each one.

After deciding which one you like , then purchasing it , be sure and find an online forum of users who will discuss and answer all questions as you'll have many

Im using pc right now and have been trying out Fl Studio, Reaper, Ableton Live 8 but I do need more time to decide what one is the best. When I purchased my interface the gy suggguested Pro Tools but no trial for that so I don't know about how it works.
I have had the best luck with reaper but do need to know how the O works a lil better as far as the settings as I just got it a month ago

Keep in mind that there is a Logic plug-in of sorts for the Oasys I believe. This won't be of any application to you if you're using a PC, but a reason to use Logic if you're a Mac person.

I have onlyworked with Logic Pro 9 and am very happy with the result.

I can get some awesome sounds "doubling" the Oasys sounds on top of Logics own sounds.

The sequencing is very easy to use and I have had almost no software "glitches" (knock on wood)

Protools is the best. Everyone uses it

Protools 8 has been great midi and programming wise.

I use a HD3 system, but just a LE systems would be fine.

Protools sounds great and you can take you songs to any real studio in the world.
Oasys 88, 2 gig ram, EXB-DI and all the current expansions. VIRUS TI Desktop, Protools Horizons and SSL Bundles

Pro tools ?
The guy where I purchased my Interface from told me to use pro tools
Question ?
New at this, when I did this back in the 80's I had 6 keyboards and a drum machine in my rig and it was no problem to set midi channels and record tracks.
with only the Oasys, how are you setting the midi channels for the voices ?
does the DAW remember the voice and midi channel and when you call up a song it sets everything where it needs to be or do you need to set up some sort of templet for sequencing purposes and have this called up for the DAW to work properly.

with only the Oasys, how are you setting the midi channels for the voices ? Did you mean to say 'midi channels for tracks' ?

Beginning p.373 of the parameter guide… Track parameter tab > Midi tab

Re : DAW remembering this or that… I suppose you could have your DAW
transmit a sysex message at the beginning of each song with all the
settings you want , however, I'm not that familiar with the process and someone more familiar could add a 'How-to' .
In the Oasys I would create a song with no musical data in it other than Song & trk titles, midi chnl assigns , FX assigns for each track and anything else you don't want to setup each time and SAVE TO THE HARD DRIVE . You can put multiple songs in 1 song file all with the individual settings you want for each song. Create and name exactly the tracks in your DAW to correspond to the tracks in the Oasys so that everything corresponds at a glance. Record all the midi notes into each individual trk in your DAW
and you're good to go

I got what you are saying, I would be in sequencer mode with all the settings as I need and just change tracks on the Oasys to match the track I want to record on the DAW...
If thats it, sounds simple enough.
I do thank everyone for there input as I would like to give this a try again after all years that have gone by and DR.T's KCS dinosaur that actually worked well
