SD card memory question

Post by bluziana »

Okay, stepped up from an Le to the TR because of memory storage issues. Now that the TR runs a 1 gig SD card, I should be able to store "roughly"
4 times the amount of sequences that an 250 mb "SmartMedia" card, right? Right now my SD card has only about 1/3 of it's memory used, yet when I try to save another song down, the TR tells me the memory card has no more space available. FYI, I use sequences for performance in a "one man band" type of situation. I'm at a loss to figure this one out. I've checked the volume, and it shows a LOT of storage capability left on the SD card.

have you accidentally write-protected the SD card?

some have a small tab on one side that you slide across to 'lock' or write-protect just like old floppies and tapes used to have.

The card is not write protected, thanks for that reminder...I did check it, and also, I wanted to mention that I thought possibly something was wrong with the card, but I actually save everything down in triplicate, using three SD 1 gig cards, and when I try to save something down, to all three cards, the same message comes up.

Try formatting those cards first and see what happens.
It's in the manual, as I remember..

by the way you can use up to 2GB SD cards for the TR.

If you use a great amount of samples, 1GB is hardly enough...

SD problem

Post by timtrax »

You're problem MAY involve improper naming of files. Believe me, I have experience with this problem! Go through all your files and eliminate things like That's all right , Maggie - I love you....Nothing but letters and numbers. And I would use underscore rather than spaces. I'm not experienced with Korg but - does the TR see the file name you give it on a computer, or the name that's on track one of the midi file???? I know some Yamaha sequencers see the drum track - or perhaps the last track. If that's the case, you may have to properly name the track that the KORG sees.
(ie meaning you have to edit the file itself) If you get all your names correct, I imagine you will be able to copy your files.

May be it would be the problem with your locking system of SD CARD. OR you should have to do De-fragmentation with it. May fragmentation is not allowing you to store your continues data.but most probable yo should check your lock system.
Where is there is will there is way.

SD and other forms of flash media do not need defragmenting. In fact this can reduce the lifespan of the card as it will wear out more sectors unnecessarily. There is usually an on-board controller that manages defragmentation and remapping of files.

I honestly can't think what could be wrong though besides write-protection though.

naming

Post by timtrax »

I tell you boys, it sounds like a naming problem. Mr. X-trade - tell me - what exactly does a Tr see when you stick a midi file on a SD card. Would it be a certain track in the file itself, or the name you give it on a computer???

It gives you the file name. Not anything like a track name from inside the file but the actual file name as it appears on the card in the FAT16 filesystem.

The TR & the FAT16 filesystem will only let you save files of a certain length (8 characters I think? plus extension), only capitals and a set of other characters including space or numbers.

A windows computer can read the FAT16 filesystem, but when formatting in windows it will default to FAT32 unless you tell it otherwise.

8 characters

Post by timtrax »

Wow! If it only allows 8 characters, (+) I would bet that he has naming problems for sure.

Well, I think windows wouldn't allow you to drop files with a longer name on anyway. Its not a limitation of the TR, its a limitation of the older filesystem that the card has to be formatted with.

And the opening post suggests having problems with saving files on the TR, So I don't see how an invalid filename could be involved.

It could be a faulty memory card possibly.

All I can say is I've had all sorts of problems putting midi files on cards that have tons of memory left on them, where I get an error message saying 'not enough memory', and only after I corrected file names, did it let me copy files. I expect if bluziana gets file names with no +, ',-,#-,., and the right length, he will be able to copy files. It's painful, but he has to cut out
