hey everybody

after playing awhile around with the korg r3 - editing some of the patches - i realize , that korg should have give it a vintage look, like the microkorg....
nice and easy editing, after all......

in that case , i thought about wood side panels for the R3 - whaddaya think? here are some sketches , like it could be

link follows ,youtubevideo(only pictures) + one song from me

Hi Feuer, the wooden cheeks sound a great idea! However your pics didn't show.

Use http://photobucket.com to upload pictures, and then once you've uploaded the picture find the "direct link" url and then insert it between the two [img][/img] tags in your post. :)

hey timo..... :D

don´t expect that much , these are only upper sight images .....in 5 minutes made in a paint programm

but instead you could listen to that background music, i made entirely with the R3

otherwise, if ya know, how to get or make such wood panels, i would be thankful.....anyone else did know ?

Well, I remember when I took apart my Virus I had to unscrew lots of screws, and then the side-cheeks came out.

You could try to do the same with your R3 - see if it's possible to take off the side-cheeks (so long as the chassis isn't just one block) - and then you can use them as templates to make your own.

wow.....that was a lot of DIY...... :D

i am not afraid , to unscrew some screws - problem is to get the right wood ....

if i get that to work.... i mean, getting the woodblocks in shape, how should i finish them ?
should i varnish them ? and if, how ?

I don't have much experience in woodworking, but a light varnish (not overly heavy) would work well. Nothing that detracts from the R3 itself. A slightly medium-darker or red wood may suit the R3, given that it's black?

But those aspects are for your personal taste, rather than functionality.

If you can see, the Radias has wooden side-cheeks:

As does the Virus TI:

Cherry wood, perhaps?

Wood ends

Post by FnFU »

I did mine in red oak. Personally, I felt the way Korg has the ends inset on the R3 gives it a cheap unfinished look that's completely at odds with its feature set and sound! I have to say, I think it looks damn good in wood and the extra weight feels nice to me also.

Wow! Good work :D I have to try this myself...it looks like a much more serious instrument now.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with the outcome. I guess I didn't go into the "how to" of it, though, for those who wanted to try it themselves. It's fairly straight forward. I used some red oak cabinet wood, found at Home Depot. Just trace around the ends of the R3 on the wood with a pencil. I used a jig saw to cut out the traced patterns, however, it was difficult around the tight bends and they didn't come out perfect, but good enough. I'd recommend a scroll saw for the perfectionist. After cutting, sand them to more precise shape with coarse grit sand paper, if necessary, then round the edges and finish with finer grits. Next I thought it best to mount them before doing the finish, in case I screwed up and ruined them somehow in the mounting process. You have to open your R3, obviously. Luckily, its easy to do. Just remove ALL the screws from the bottom and lift off the top, no fuss. With the bottom removed, I held the wood sides in place and drilled out four holes each from the inside, through the plastic, and into the wood. Afterward, I drilled the holes in the plastic out to a larger diameter than the screws than I was using to allow "wiggle room" to adjust and align the end caps. For the finish, I used common Minwax wood stain to color them. Follow directions on the can. Just a note, as this stuff is oil based, it may take 2-3 days to "dry" before it's not tacky anymore and ready for the finish. I finished with Minwax fast drying polyurethane. It comes in a spray can. Again, follow directions on the product. Once the finish was dry, it was time for the final mounting of the ends. I used brass wood screws of the appropriate legth with, very important, brass finishing washers (size #8 I think) on both the inside AND outside of the plastic end panels. This spread out the stress from tightening the screws to keep them from pulling through or cracking the plastic. They also serve as spacers to set the wood far enough apart from the inset plastic ends so that the case goes back together normally and the new end caps sit straight and flush. That's about it. Just put all the screws back in the bottom and it's good to go. Hope someone else enjoys the project as much I did and gets similarly satisfying reults!

Hi FnFu, nice pics.

Seeing that Alesis Micron in your setup raises a question I have since a long time? How is it's vocoder? There are several synths (Micron Miniak, Virus etc.) offering a vocoder but it is very hard to find a valuable demo of them. Most promoting vids are dull and limits to a simple "1-2-3 vocoder vocoder"

Well, I love the Micron as a synth but, truth be told, I haven't tried to use the vocoder (don't really have much use for it in industrial muisic). I heard it can be as good as the R3, but has to be programmed whereas the R3 has pretty good pre-programmed presets. You made me curious so I checked and, you're right, there's not much out there to demo the Micron vocoder. I found a few vids a guy did using the Miniak as a talkbox (Miniak is the same synth engine as the Micron, you probably know...). Sounds pretty good!
