Problem with the pitch bend joystick - I think???

Hi all

I have recently purchased a 2nd hand MicroX which I love but the pitch bend joystick seens to be acting very strangely.

Left to right there is no change in pitch - up there is some change on modulation and down - and this is the doozy - it changes the tuning of the keys downwards by one tone and remains there until I reboot.

Can anyone shed some light here??

The triton series joystick is prone to problems with wires coming loose which can result in floating voltages and similar things which cause these problems. The first sign is when one of your joystick axies doesn't work, and sometimes operating other controls does it instead (for example foot pedal/damper, other axis, knobs, etc). This is more common on the cheaper builds like the MicroX, TR, etc.

Anyway, the best solution is to take it to a local keyboard tech or electronic engineer. Usually one who stocks and sells or is affiliated with KORG. or the store you bought it from. Or in the USA contact KORG and arrange to take it to a KORG service centre.

You can fix it yourself but not without basic electronic skills and even then you always risk fudging it up even more yourself, and most certainly voiding your warranty if it still applies. It is always best to take it to someone qualified. A simple joystick repair shouldn't cost too much.

first of all, thank you for the Info.

I have the same Problem with the Joystick in the y-axis. Up and Down works perfect but left and right doesn't work.

I have more than basic electronics skills. So I will repair it myself. guarantee is no longer valid!

Can you explaine the common Hardware Problem in Detail?
Is there only some loose wires or defect electronics parts?

Hey great thread. I've got the same problem with my Korg Triton classic. The joystick did not work in the right X direction (left was ok) and would transpose about 1-1/2 steps randomly. Sometimes it would do it 4 or 5 times in 20 minutes, sometimes it wouldn't do it for two hours. The joystick then recently would not work at all in the X direction.

Took the thing apart but saw no loose wires around the joystick, but ordered a new mini board for the X-direction. I've read other posts about replacing the wiring harness, but not sure what that is? Is is the group of 4 wires that attaches to the mini circuit board or is it some sort of plastic clip that holds the wires so they don't move around? None of the welds look broken, so I'm wondering if replacing the board will solve the problem. Any thoughts?

Oh, and yes, I do have a little bit of skill at repairing electronics and the keyboard is 10 years old so it's out of warranty.

Argh.. it happend to me too. I'm really pissed off, since I haven't even played my MicroX for more than 50 hours or something in the two years I've had it It's a shame that Korg kept shipping these poor quality joysticks for SO LONG.

Mine constantly gives off JS+X messages (full bend) when I use the joystick. For example a JS+Y bend will give JS+Y message but also a full JS+X bend until I release the joystick.

Can anyone one suggest what might be wrong? I suspect it's simply a damaged wire or something. I have some experience repairing things like this so I think I can manage but any tips on opening up the Micro X and repairing the joystick are welcome.

Not sure if this will help, but I'll post this info just in case. Supposedly on the old Triton's, you need to do something with the 'wire harness' that connects the joystick because the wires get moved around over time and come loose. I'm not sure what that part is exactly, it could be the plastic part that connects the wires to the joystick or to the main board.

I would try removing the two wires from the X-direction mini-circuit board to see if that does the trick (I did this on my Triton). If the problem goes away, replace those two wires (try Sweetwater music parts department). If it doesn't, post again.

You may need a soldering gun to remove the wires. On the Triton, the wires are soldered in place, not clipped (although it may look like it is a clip on connector).

Turns out the Micro X comes with a two-year factory warranty (thank you Korg ), so I'm bringing it into the store where I bought this week.

mine works fine in the pitch up/down directions, but the pitch twitches when I put the x-axis up, and the x-axis twitches when it is put to full.

I'll open it up and try to reconnect the wiring, but I have a feeling that might not work. . .

So I'm going to try to order a new expression controller from Korg and swap out the old one. . .

Is this joystick only issue or is X50 vulnerable too with its wheels???

I spent about £35 to have my TR joystick repaired.

anyway, it shouldn't be possible with the wheels on the X50 because it is completely different, almost no motion. Most mod wheels use a fixed potentiometer.
