Ableton Live 6 set up for PadKontrol. Can't even make sounds

Post by trip »

Hello.

I'm a complete noob seeking some help here.

I installed the driver as the instruction told me to.

I read up on Ableton Live instruction to hook my PadKontrol to Ableton Live, but nothing's working out.

I have a few suspicions of where the problem might be coming from though.

1. I can't select a Control Surface on Ableton Live for PadKontrol

And I can't find PadKontrol

2. PadKontrol seemingly isn't connected to my laptop... WTF?

Any idea on what I should do?

The problem isn't with the PadKontrol as such - you can see it is working because in your 1st and 2nd pictures you have its MIDI ports selected. And they are in the MIDI port list below. So the driver is working.

The first box is for selecting the template that abletion will use to map the controls, I think.

Anyway, I don't think you need to set up the PadKontrol as a 'control surface' In most DAWs that means setting it up as a mixer or transport control device. I assume you're wanting to use the PadKontrol more to trigger notes (or drums), like a keyboard. In which case, you should be able to select it as the input for an instrument or MIDI track.

edit:
also, it won't appear in 'safely remove devices', because it doesn't need 'safely removing' like a USB storage device, its fine just to unplug it. To see all the device that constitute and that are attached to your computer, look at Device Manager

Yes, this is what I would like to do.
How do I do this part?

Well, I don't have (or at least I don't use) abletion, so can't really help you there. Either way, it is more of a question of how to use abletion than anything to do with the PadKontrol.

You might get lucky and someone here familiar with your kind of setup will explain it, or you could look it up, read the manual... And if that doesn't help, go and find somewhere where you can ask Abletion Live users about how to use a MIDI controler. It should be pretty basic though.

Hi,

For ableton and padKontrol this is what I did:
Install the Korg USB driver
Install the Editor for the pK
Load up ableton Live and go into preferences and enable Track and Remote for input for your padKontrol and output for it as well. You should tap the pads and look in the upper right side of Live to see a light flashing. Have the help/info thing enabled (not in front of Live atm so...) so that when you mouse over it should show description in the lower left side of Live.

If you see input you should be good to go. Now, before going any further do the following (worked for me):
Load up the pK editor, load set and find the factory default file and load it up. It should replace the stuff in the left side with a bunch of options, If you see GURU select it and check the note assignments for the pads. It should be ok at this point.
Load it to the PK/Commit it.
Now in Live go to your Live devices, double click on Drum Rack and drop some samples onto the pads and enable record for that MIDI track. You should know hear it.

I load up GURU from factory* file as it maps correctly to the Drum Rack. If you don't you will be off by an octave (i.e. you will be playing an octave higher than default cell in the Drum Rack. Just move up the cell to next group of 4 and drop samples and you should be ok that way as well.

Hope that helps, and I don't frequent this (enough) so it may be a bit before I respond to any queries in the forums.

Mike
