Hey everyone,
I just bought a TR88 online recently and it does not have the EXP-SMPL upgrade. I've been working through the operation manual very tediously page by page. However I find that from about pages 35-41, and 49-62 don't make any sense to me at all. Is this because I do not have the upgrade? I picked back up at Page 63 (sequencer mode) and it's smooth sailing again. Is there something I'm missing? or are these pages strictly not making sense because I do not have the upgrade?
Wow I'm not even 30 yet and I'm the new senior citizen! Technology is a bitch.

Program mode, in particular, won't make a whole lot of sense to you if you don't know how subtractive synthesis works. There are some great tutorials online, including Sound On Sound magazine's series titled 'Synth Secrets'. You don't need to know this as a complete beginner, though; you can get pretty far by taking the factory programs and either changing the effects or mixing or layering them together in combis.

Is this why I'm not really understanding "Filter 4.1, 4.2 Ed Filter" and terms like that? I can't seem to find these pages, Just 1.1 everything on my LCD screen.
Thanks again.

Press the 'MENU' button in any mode and you'll see a list of all the edit pages to select from.
operation is quite easy to figure out for yourself but basically you press the function key underneath the one you want, it will cycle through that column until you get to the one you want, then hit the function key on the far right (says 'open' or something like that).
