Which foot midi controller to buy?

Post by billy_the_king »

Hey!! I am about to buy a foot midi controller!!
I am thinking of the Behringer FCB1010...
Though, I hesitate a little because its too big and I wont be needing all its switches...

Does anybody know any other midi controller I could buy?? I would be glad if it was smaller than the fcb....

thx in advance.... 8)

The FCB is really big and sturdy, but also very cost-efficient.

If you buy it, get this software upgrade: http://www.ossandust.be/

Roland and Yamaha have similar devices, but less powerful and more expensive.

I found a nice listing at NexTag:

The Behringer is the way to go but you need the ROM upgrade to get the full potential.

It's not a software upgrade though. You have to burn a new EPROM or buy an EPROM (what I did) from someone. TOTALLY worth it.

It IS actually a pure software upgrade. The software is in the ROM chip you order, but you can also download the software for free and "burn" it yourself (definitely not recommended though).

you apparently don't understand what a software update is.

You have to physically replace the ROM.

A pure software update is one where you hook the device to your PC, run a utility and your device is now on the new version. The M50 is a software update. The DW-8000 was a hardware update.

When screwdrivers are involved, it's not a software update.

A matter of definition. Whatever...

Get the ROM in any case, don't try to burn the software yourself into a ROM.

I've been looking into this a lot. The Roland pedal (FC-300) is very limited; it's biggest issue is that it can only send data on one MIDI channel unless you're in patch mode (which lets you send arbitrary streams of MIDI data, i.e. a bunch of control changes or a bunch of note ons and so on); only too bad that you can't use stompbox functionality in patch mode.

The Yamaha one, the MFC10, looks a lot better then the Behringer, especially if you want to use it just for sending control changes.

Did you compare with http://www.ossandust.be/files/compariso ... %20Uno.pdf ?

I don't know anything about the Yamaha controller though.

I've owned an FCB1010 with the UNO firmware before.

Here's how it breaks down.

Behringer: 10 slots, 5 used to send control changes, 5 used for program changes (and optional control changes, but not behaving as a stompbox).

Yamaha: 10 slots, all 10 used to send up to 4 control changes OR 4 note ons/note offs OR 4 program changes each. Control changes will behave as stomp boxes.

I think the Yamaha gives you a bit more flexibility than the Behringer, though you do lose out on being able to send program changes and control changes with a single pedal press.

If you want primarily stompbox capabilities, go with the Yamaha; if you send more presets, the Behringer is the better choice, especially if you want to send CCs some of the time with those program changes.

For my live pedal, the top 5 are my "emergency" go to patches - piano, organ, lead, analog-like brass/strings pad, and EP. The bottom 5 are damper, portamento, susteneto, SW1 and SW2. Pedal 1 is for Expresson (CC#4) and the second pedal is for master volume (CC#7). It controls all of my synths live.

My studio pedal is basically the same but I forget what the changes are.

hey guys!, i am really new in this world of MIDI, and i want to know if with this foot midi controllers, i can easily change the sounds of mi M50 on live sessions, how to put the m50 sounds i desire in each swich, is this made by a computer?, and finally if i can control a midi controller as a Rolan AX7, the way of Henrik Klingenberg of Sonata Arctica does, using the M50 sounds.

Thankkksss!!!

The controller will change the patches in a specific bank that you are set to by default. I used one with my Triton Ex and still have the Behringer here. Yes it is big, and yes it is sturdy as well. I haven't gone the ROM route yet as I don't know how much more functionality I would get out of it as I am not playing live any more. I do want to use it for controlling stuff in Ableton Live so it wouldn't be getting much use with the M50. I'd look into what it currently can do for you (never got expression pedals to work for volume adjustment, that would have been nice while playing live for quieter passages... but not a big issue) and what the ROM upgrade will get you.

GOOD post here. I have a related question.

I would like to setup my FCB1010 to activate the 4 chord buttons. Anyone have a "step by step" process?

I have spent hours last year trying to get that to work, without much luck. Setting it up as a stomp box(es), was simple. But to actually fire notes, not so simple for me.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated...

Mike
