Well, my ideas was not to sound mediocre.
Yeah sure, I didn't take what you said that way either. I know exactly what you mean. It's just a personal thing with me that's all. I have to sound as good as I can for my own benefit, not anyone else's.

I'm very OCD like that. Everything has to be the best it can be otherwise it will niggle away at me and I won't be happy doing what I'm doing.
I do try to look for the sounds as good as I can, but sometimes the public don't appreciate all you hard work.
If it makes you feel good, then that's the most important thing in my opinion. Anything that makes you feel happy is something that's worth the effort.

I know a few people who play now just for the money and it's so sad to hear them. They hate want they are doing but can't give it up. One guy hates it so much that he's still playing the same keyboards as he was when I was a kid. A Technics K700 and a Yamaha PSR 6100

Freaking unbelievable.

Hey, those are amazing pics you have there. I never thought Technics made keyboards. I always thought it was a home audio company.

Well, I have never known what it is to play for the money, because I never do it. I always play for my friends and family, at home, in friend's homes, in my kids school and the sort. But you are so right, that when I nail a sound right, it feels so good when people tell you: "That sounded Amazingly similar to the original".

I had the same thing going through my mind last year. And there are a couple of more gigs coming up so. Yeah. I understand the pain.

But on the other hand, what made me go in the "Take the OASYS with you" way is the fact that this was the keyboard where I programmed all of my sounds. I wanted to be able to have that sound. And I want to be able to relax and enjoy while playing music. So.. I bought a soft case and made absolutely sure that noone touches it but me. I carried it around, took it out, put it in, everything. If anyone came close, like, ever, I would start yelling. People were a bit surprised by that, but they got used to it. And never touched it.

If you go with the OASYS... Don't give it to a roadie. Never. If you go with something else... Well :-) Decide for yourself :-)

This Liontracs idea is not a bad one.

Sharp: I, for one, would be curious to read your impressions of this instrument under your hands, when it arrives. I've been curious about it for several months now. Any chance for Mp3s would also be welcome.

Good Choice Sharp 8)

Hope to see your videos soon. What i'm looking for in one of your videos is to show/highlight some use of VST's etc and how efficient the Lionstracs is from your User point of view using software etc.

Hope your gigs go well, and you definitrly made the right choice not taking the OASYS out (IMO) Just hope the Lionstracs is reliable for you

Just got the Keyboard today.

So far so good. I spent around 4 hours playing it today checking out the sounds, looking at how it operates and so on. The MediaPlayer is exactly what I need for gigging too. No problem playing over it with Giga sounds, or VSTi's. Changing to other songs is dead easy too, so much so that I wouldn't use the second media player. You can just use one and while its playing have the next song cued up ready to go. Just hit the play button and away it goes into the next song.

Lots to check out before I start posting any detail info.

Sharp.

At this stage I've done enough with the Gigasampler function that I can comment on it with confidence. The way the system is setup you can copy your giga files to a folder on the internal hard disk and then assign them to Program so that the Giga sounds are displayed on the screen much like a factory sound would appear on a typical workstation.

So after you import them calling up a sound is as complicated as touching the Progarm sound just like you do on any KORG workstation. It's quite an odd feeling actually to be able to navigate Giga libraries in this manner as it makes them very much every day use files regardless of their size. It also makes no difference what library each file is from, they can all be placed into the same Progarm banks and navigated as if they where just normal workstation sounds.

I've imported all of Symphony Of Voices and the average size of a program sound is 32MB. The delay between changing sounds is actually WAY faster than a KORG as the effects don't get cut off and the actual loading of the file when you select the program sound is only a fraction of a second. Too short to time, actually.

For larger files, currently the biggest file I've tested is a 489MB file and that loads in just under one second. So that makes even large giga files feel like your just throwing around typical factory sounds on a typical keyboard, only you obviously have the far superiority sound due to the size.

The master effects consists of Chorus, Reverb and Echo .They are always available and routing sounds to them as simple as adjusting the send value in your program followed by pressing enter to save the changes. If you want more effects outside the basics then you need to launch a VST effects plugin of your choice.

So that's the Gigasampler function. It's dead easy to operate, navigating sounds once they are imported is no different than working with a typical workstation. Loading times are super fast even for large files. The effects don't cut off so typically changing sounds is seamless.

More to come on other systems.

Hi Everyone.
I found some time tonight to record some video footage. The following files are in mp4 format and recorded in HD (720p) so expect large file sizes. YouTube won't let me upload tonight for some odd reason so I'm going to host these off my own server for a while.

01 – Introduction
Just a quick video of me talking about the video's and what's to come.
Click to Download - 94MB

02 – Loading and setting up giga files.
In this video I show how you can assign Giga files to slots on the screen so that they can be recalled at any time with a single press of a button. The audio is a direct line so you can also listen to the quality of the sounds in this video.
Click to Download - 500MB

03 – Piano Performance.
A short performance of me playing an original tune on straight piano.
Click to Download – 139MB

Kind Regards
Sharp

Hi Sharp -

Firstly a quicky - could not view those videos on my PC - perhaps is just my PC but thought I'd flag it.

Secondly - and excuse my late drop into this thread - but I'm a bit bemused/confused by this thread and would be grateful for a little context info:

1. This workstation looks intriguing. I checked their website and it seems they have a huge range of workstation models dating back some years. Never the less their web site is really awful and provides poor information and navigation so its difficult to understand the product, what it does, why there as so many different models and so on. In fact the website seems quite amateur and dated. Admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time on the site, but is seems quirky. So I find this all quite interesting but also bemusing and wonder about the following:

- What is the nature of these workstations - are they like open labs in running VST plugins and the like? Will it run plugins you already own?

- Is it Linux based so only run particular soft synths?

- you mention Giga - is that Gigasampler? Aren't they now gone so this feature is effectively useless to anyone not owning gigasampler samples. Can it run other sample package designed fo Kontakt and EXS24 for example?

- I find it curious that these workstations have not by and large featured in the music media, are never reviewed by the music mags I've never seen reference to them, at all, beyond your post though I keep my ear to the ground on these matters. Very curious to me. So are they reliable, reputable, stable...

- If several years old, how capable are they these days hardware and software wise?

Overall, I'm picking up something slightly 'suspect' with this workstation line - I can't put my finger on it and I may well be prejudiced but also it may be because they look so amazing yet have clearly not captured the broad keyboard player market imagination.

All of that said - they look very interesting; with bucket loads of user interface features and perhaps even a highly coveted low latency playback of sample packages and soft synths??

Anyway - any context info you can give would be appreciated - I just can't get a handle on where this product is coming from and whether its worth investigation / investment.

thanks,
Kevin.

Hi Kevin
Firstly a quicky - could not view those videos on my PC - perhaps is just my PC but thought I'd flag it.
Just download Quick Time or update your windows Media player. Your media player would have to be very old not to play these files. They are just standard mp4 files.

I'd highly recommend taking the time to get them working because you won't believe how fast the keyboard is.
This workstation looks intriguing. I checked their website and it seems they have a huge range of workstation models dating back some years.
There's technically only two products at the moment and from those you have different variations of them like standard editions or pro editions. It's the same as Open Labs for example. They have the Neko and depending on how much you want to spend you can buy different versions which have more options included as standard.

As for the age of the Mediastation, it's their first product but it's a real open ended product. They might at some point stop manufacturing it but that makes no since you can still upgrade it's PC parts and keep on installing the new OS.

So it's not something that's just supported whiles it's in production. Even after it's discontinued the OS for the replacement products will run on it, and in time if it starts to feel a little dated and slow, you can upgrade it's PC.
What is the nature of these workstations - are they like open labs in running VST plugins and the like? Will it run plugins you already own?
They are Open Keybaords based on linux, but also have lots of additional hardware controls and a custom OS that allows them to also be Open Arranger Keyboards too. So it's like a workstaiton, Arranger and Open Keyboard all in one.

Also because it's based on Linux, you can run 8 Asio Hosts, where on a Neko you can only run 1 because of a limitation of Windows.
Is it Linux based so only run particular soft synths?
No, it should run anything. Wine is running under Linux which allows you to launch applications written for windows on the keyboard.
you mention Giga - is that Gigasampler? Aren't they now gone so this feature is effectively useless to anyone not owning gigasampler samples. Can it run other sample package designed fo Kontakt and EXS24 for example?
No, Garritan bought it from Tascam http://www.garritan.com/

It's not Gigasampler anyway, it's Linux Sampler which reads Giga Libraries. You really need to see the video to understand how all this works with the custom OS.

In the video you will see me going to sounds that are over 500MB in size just like I was selecting a sound on the screen of the OASYS. No PC interface, no Linux or Windows. Just a simple screen that displays the sounds like a normal workstation that also loads massive files in way less than 1 second..

Not forgetting you can also install whatever you want on it if you don't feel like converting libraries.

For example just because AKAI format is dead doesn't mean I have to throw away Symphony Of Voices and my many other AKAI Libraries. They sound just as good when converted to Giga format.
I find it curious that these workstations have not by and large featured in the music media, are never reviewed by the music mags I've never seen reference to them, at all, beyond your post though I keep my ear to the ground on these matters. Very curious to me.
lol... I really don't know how you missed it but they are well known.
So are they reliable, reputable, stable...
No idea as I have yet to fully test the keyboard myself. All I've done so far is what you can see in the video's. It's a completely different concept to anything I've seen ever before and so there is a learning curve to this one for sure.

So right now the only thing I can say is that as a machine playing back giga files in Linux Sampler it's rock solid, but that only makes up for a fraction of the entire systems abilities and I have a long way to go yet.
If several years old, how capable are they these days hardware and software wise?
Makes no difference as the system is truly open. For example, the Mediastation line was first launched 5 years ago yet a brand new Dual Core 2.8Ghz CPU was installed in my unit along with new motherboard and additional ram last week. Now I have a current model again and it only cost 150 for the PC parts :)
Overall, I'm picking up something slightly 'suspect' with this workstation line - I can't put my finger on it and I may well be prejudiced but also it may be because they look so amazing yet have clearly not captured the broad keyboard player market imagination.
Lots of people have a problem with the website not being clear, and the official video's never really answering any questions you would have as a musician. http://www.youtube.com/lionstracs

I think part of it is down to the language barrier.

Do check out my video's though. I know you will be interested in what you see.

Hi Sharp -

Thanks for your comprehensive reply - i t really helps - I see much clearer now where this workstation is coming from.

Still curious on its popularity - I genuinely do not see reference to it around - but then who the hell am I ??

Anyway - as said - thanks for the detailed pointers - I'll be sure to look into it.

Happy playing!!

cheers,
Kevin.
