I haven't used ProTools, however I have looked into it a few times.
I personally use cubase for my own projects, although my university uses Logic Pro 9 (Yes, it is called Logic, not 'Logics')
The problem I have with protools is the licensing system. You have to pay for a massive upgrade pack in order to use it with any interface you like, and to have a larger number of tracks... Basically, everything is a paid extra.
And just because something is an 'industry standard', doesn't mean it's the best.
I find that with Cubase and Logic, you pay much less, you get more. Unlimited tracks, use any audio interface compatible with your computer... and the plugins that come with Logic are brilliant. Even the stuff that comes with the express version is pretty good. The only reason why I use Cubase is because I bought it before I got a mac, otherwise I'd be using Logic from the start.

If you have a mac, Logic. It taps into the parts of the OS specifically designed by apple for lag free sound editing. Turns my terrible 1 core mac into a music machine.
