I've just bought a WS EX off of eBay and was wondering what the original shipped with in the way of manuals and ROM cards. Thank you.

Hi,
The WS came with 2 manuals, a patch name list and if you have the EX, it came also with a ROM card with patches using the EX waves. Congrats to your new purchase. If you bought it to get the best Pads sounds, you made the right choice. Google Ben Hall and you'll find a site with loads of sysex files for your new synth.
BTW, if your screen is dim and makes a whinning noise, it's ok. They,re all like that now...

Thanks Blink.
Yes I heard about the screen thingy. Thanks for getting back to me. I'm into the Genesis thing (youtube: jumb0j0ck) and was wanting something nearer to the original.
If I might ask another? Concerning editor and librarian software, do you use any? It was to make editing a bit easier and also patch switching with the EX.
All the best

Hi Jumb0j0ck,
No problems for the info. The WS is a great synth if you take the time to learn it. As soft editors go, i only tried the SoundQuest one. So i can't judge but i didn't like it at all and prefer to edit directly on the thing.
I, too, was into prog rock at the time i used to gig. I was giging with a Trinity at the time and wasn't using the WS with my band. I reprogrammed all the sounds of our songlist in the WS and tried it out at a rehearsal with the band. They all agreed that the WS sounded better, more analog beefy sound despite it's an all-digital synth too!! As long as you don't need a good piano sound and portamento for your solos, the WS can give you all you need.

Congratulations with your Wavestation purchase. I own two (and for the same purpose: playing in a Genesis tribute, see www.wecantdance.nl) and it's a lovely synth with one of the best keyboards I ever played.
In case you are wondering what Tony used, here is the list of patches that where used:
Ooo's (no son of mine, tell me why and used as a layer on other songs probably)
Warm strings (fading lights first section strings, used as a layer with the Ooo's on no son of mine, used live on firth of fifth)
WHEEL Vox (driving the last spike, used live for second home by the sea)
Octave strings (fading lights last section strings)
Minilead (fading lights, program three versions. One with all oscilators set to poly, one that's default—all oscilators set to legato— and a third one with no wavesequencing. The no wavesequencing one was used live in the old medley)
Whisper voices (hold on my heart, dreaming while you sleep—although it is layered with JD800 there)
The Touch organ preset is a nice organ that you can use in driving the last spike (though the original is coming from a roland VK1000 on the album, live done with the Voce DMI64 MKII—patch 3 to be precise)
As a sidenote: Tony programmed all sounds for the tour without effects. He processed everything with his outboard processors (all Yamaha SPX90's) which is why the effects are different then standard in the presets. He connected the 3/4 outputs instead of the mains.
He also set the keyboard to local off. If you will play fading lights, be sure to set the velocity settings/touch response (not sure what it is called in the global menu) to "4". That's the setting tony used. Changing this setting will affect the speed of the wavesequence as the touch response is different.

Many thanks, R-T, for taking the time to let me have all that info. I'd love to sit down with you over a couple of coffees and just pick your brains, although I know that once a musician or fan has spent a lot of time working out notes and/or patched they're reluctant to share the knowledge for other who can't be bothered.
Whisper Voices is so like the sound between the 2 Domino sections as well. Other than that, I'd like to ask just one question: how do you come by all the detail about the use of equipment on stage?
Back to thread, I received a CD with all sorts of original patches and manuals so I think I'm sorted that way. I just need to pluck up the courage to replace the backlight.
All the best

The sound between the two domino sections evolved over the years. It was Voices from the synclavier on the invisible touch tour (like also used in home by the sea), Warm Strings on the we can't dance tour and i'm not even sure if it is wavestation only on the calling and turn it on again tours. I still hear the warm string but also something more breathy on top of it.jumbojock wrote:Many thanks, R-T, for taking the time to let me have all that info. When I have my rig back I'll try to sort it out.
Note that that section is always played with a prophet 10 pad for the chords (it's basically a split setup).
As the knowledge is concerned, 10 years of study, very good listening, knowing a lot about gear and sound and studying footage (like trying to read LED displays on gear from videos and photo's) did the trick.
My backlight isn't working at all on my EX (in fact, my EX isn't working either…) but when you have sufficient light in your room it should still be usable. I never bothered replacing it's backlight (I'd rather fix the EX itself) as my setup is now automated and tested before every gig so I don't even need the display anyways.

Santi, I need some help. I've been with my Wavestation a few hours now, and I can't find the ooo's patch or the Wheel Vox. Is a performance or a patch ?
