IS MY R3 BROKEN

Post by mandis »

Hello! I have a problem with my r3, i was trying to make a vocoder patch for one song, and i just could'nt seem to get any noise out of it no matter what. I have deleted all the factory preset in day 1 i got this and i remember it working back then. Could someone give me some sort of simple vocoder patch to get started with? Like tell me what to do with all the parameters.. I've lost my manual somewhere and this keeps buggin me!! How can i check that everything works like it should on this synth? I think im hearing some defects especially with the DRIVE's.. They get really messy sometimes.
I once dropped this when i was drunk and trying to catch a bus. But it was in a bag and there is not a single scratch on it.

I don't think a software problem would manifest itself in only one area of the synth because all the DSP is done on one or two chips - its not like you can just damage the drive 'section'. If you had a software problem the chances are that everything would be screwed up. Drive can get quite 'messy'. Anyway, its difficult to tell without a better description of the problem or hearing it. You could just be pushing the output too hard for whatever it's plugged into?

You can however damage the knobs, output boards and connections, etc.

Check the input gain/trim control (there should be one on the back - I'm not sure where as I don't have an R3), that should set the input level for the mic and probably another control for the line input jack socket.

You can also find the manual online. So there is no excuse for not looking in it - even if you lose it, it's not the end of the world!
You should be able to find it on any KORG site's support section. For example:
http://www.korguksupport.co.uk/page.cfm?pageid=619

I don't know about the R3, but on my Radias it's possible to get a vocoder going just by hitting the vocoder button on an empty init-patch, just playing with basic sawtooth! You should check the input level and connections though as mentioned.

Thanks for making this clear to me! Ofcourse r3 isn't an analog synth and has chips instead of modular parts so just one section can't be damaged. I seem to have a problem getting the signal from the mic to the synth, so ill be testing that tomorrow. I'll also post some audio samples because the sound seems to totally lose it's frequency (not the tone i guess) from applying some drives AND osc ctrl such as vpm etc. too much. I've had some troubles getting decent sounds lately so i hope this would figure if its just my programming skills getting worse or some sort of defect in the synth itself. :D Maybe i just seem to lack inspiration right now since it kinda comes and goes like a sine wave.
