Yes, but its not very straightforward. The knobs weren't really designed for this.
You can set the knob to Expression (CC#11 I think?), and then in the MIDI filter parameters set every other timbre to ignore that knob. That only works for one timbre or set of timbres where you want to bring them in all at once. Otherwise setting two knobs to expression causes them to conflict and both knobs will affect the same timbres.

X-trade, Thank you for a suberb answer to my question.
I've set up a piano - strings 'comb' with volume (CC07) - only the strings controlled by knob 4. It works really well - I can have - well let's just say it acts like a little mixer (since there's no dedicated sliders). It is a very handy musical tool. I can (eg) hold a chord at the end of a song and fade out the strings - very nice! (or increase the strings)
...and now, using it as a template, I can set up
piano - brass
piano - organ
Whurly - strings
etc.etc.etc.

Look at the 'MIDIx' pages. They have the checkboxes for filtering which timbres respond to what controls.
MIDI3-1 and MIDI3-2 have the settings for the four knobs. You want to uncheck every timbre that you don't want to respond to that knob.
Kanthos, this method is less messy and more efficient for combi mode because it doesn't involve modifying any programs.
It doesn't work when you want to have independent control of the volume of two or more timbres, but it works fine for fading in and out just one sound or set of layered sounds.

Of course; just wanted to make sure that the original poster saw it as an option.X-Trade wrote:Kanthos, this method is less messy and more efficient for combi mode because it doesn't involve modifying any programs.

more knob problems
Last week I wiped all my settings accidently and I'm starting over this week.
I had a wonderful piano strings combi- with strings volume controlled by knob 4(b)
I am unable to recreate the combi! Now my knob 4 turns off both the piano and strings. It doesn't matter what boxes I check on or off in the midi page.
It doesn't seem to matter if I rout the sounds through a/b or ifx. I have a foot pedal hooked up that controls the volume of both

I think the problem is the same as if you try to assign the same parameter to two different knobs. You can't filter out the two knobs to different timbres when they are set to the same thing because they are both sending out the same message - in this case 'expression'.
But naturally this will apply too if you are using a pedal for the 'expression' message. So you'd have to set either your pedal or your knob to send out volume instead. The disadvantage of this is that volume will override the mixer setting whilst expression works within it. So i'd set the strings to 'volume' and leave the pedal for expression.
examples:
You set knob1 to expression, and knob2 to expression. Then you set timbre1 to respond only to knob1 and timbre2 to respond only to knob2.
knob1 sends an expression message, and timbre1 is only listening for expression messages.
But timbre2 is listening for expression messages too! So turning either will have the same effect and they will override eachother in that one could be at the top and one could be at zero and the last one you touched will take effect.
expression and volume: if you set the volume for a timbre to 50, then the full range of the expression control will only give you an effective volume between 0 and 50. similarly if you set volume to and go for half on the expression control, you'll have an effective volume of 40.
