"Sage"

Post by UCanDream »

"Sage" was originally written and recorded using a Yamaha CP30 (no, not the multi-lingual droid from Star Wars), a SCSI Prophet 5, and some very modest mixing and recording gear and copyrighted in 1987. In 1992 it received a much needed revision using what was then pretty state of the art stuff. It was then re-recorded in 2010 using modern equipment. This version features the Korg Oasys, Yamaha EX5, Yamaha XS7, Korg 01/W Pro, and (believe it or not) an Ensoniq SD-1.

(In loving memory of Adam Martinez, quite possibly one of the strongest driving forces in my musical life.)

Hey Chilly.

Thank you. Yes, it is MP3 because the .wav file is over 70 MB and so I had to go with a compromised conversion. I do have an HD version but I have to get my MySpace page set up first before I can post it. Sorry about that...

P.S. I believe you must have a Motif XS because you are correct....bass and guitars are played from there! The lead guitar at the end of the song is a custom patch played from the M3.

Peace,

Dear David,

Your music speaks.

I like how it flows, deepens then quiets down again. I like how the chords are melting together at the end: from 6:29 the piano changes chords but the guitar and strings stay.

It's like your other great song, All That Matters.

Who is Adam Martinez?

Best regards,
Akos

Hey Akos & Salcerin,

Thanks much. Glad you're enjoying what you hear. Akos, you have a deep appreciation for this kind of stuff. Your comments on various pieces posted here are a good indicator of that.

Adam was a good friend of mine from when I was a kid (I'm talking late teens, early twenties). He was about 10 years older than me. We did some gigs for wedding receptions mostly for friends but we also hooked up a lot with our original tunes. He was a guitar player and had a voice similar to Geddy Lee's. Back in 1988 I gave him a pretty rough copy of this song and he took an instant liking to it. He must have had the ability to visualize something a whole let better than he was hearing because it really did suck then!! LOL. He put some pretty cool lyrics to it and a gorgeous melody line. He was going to do some guitar work as well but got sick and passed away in 1989 before he got a chance to let me hear the completed version. All I have is his rough cut version of lyrics and melody with my hack keyboard work of the late 80's...lol. Adam and I were deeply connected musically. By some remote chance, the last place I ever saw him was at American Music in Bellevue, Washington. I had no clue I would never see him again...

Anyway, I dedicated this song to him and worked out some guitars that I thought he might appreciate (since I never got to hear the guitar work he was working on for it). The lead guitar at the end of "Sage" fades away deliberately to sort of symbolize the tragic loss of a good friend who faded away from the lives of a lot a people who cared for him.

Hi David,

Reading the background I find it proved you can transform your emotions and thoughts into music. Then this music can generate similar emotions and thoughts in the listeners - regardless of their mother tongue. And this magic happens without lyrics! Only using the universal language of music.

It's rare. I enjoy this the most in every style. This can connect people, spiritually - no matter where (or when!) they are.

By the way this is one of the reasons I love Rush. Additionally to their great music, Geddy's voice is very emotional and coming honestly from the heart. Plus the meaningful lyrics... An enthralling band.

Best regards,
Akos

Nicely put Akos.

I think a lot of writers find it easier to convey thoughts and emotions thru music rather than verbal articulation.

I also agree with your take on Rush. Talented dudes indeed!

Generally a lot for sure. But nowadays? I find it rare, especially in today's brutal music flowing from the major media. I don't want to use harder words...

Agreed, Akos. :-)

To Chilly7: Yes, I will work on getting the HD versions of these songs posted to a MYSpace account that I set up years ago to host these very songs. It may be a couple weeks or so.... I appreciate your enthusiasm. And I have listened to the MP3's vs. the HD.....no comparison!

IMHO music and language are the same. Music IS a language. And just as in all languages words have a certain semantic room depending on the listener same is true for music: phrases of notes and chord-progressions have a certain semantic room in the listeners head which differs between each listener.

In short: it is not possible to communicate exactly your thoughts/feelings to others, no matter if you put it in words, or music, or music + words. You will always create different emotions and thoughts in your listeners head. But that's nice! It's part of our communication game.
