Creating instruments

Post by mastere »

Ok, I'm having a hard time wording this out, but try to understand. I have a Radias.

I have 16 instruments in my User catagory, 6 of which are full. I want to create and save a 17th instrument and so on without overwriting one of the 16, all in the User catagory.

Anybody wanna help a guy out?

Hi mastere,

I can't understand exactly what are you asking but maybe we can clarify the terms a little and maybe you will find your answer:

When you create a sound (i.e. a string, piano, guitar, wind, birds or whatever you want) this is called a "program" or more suited here a "patch". A patch may consist of 1 to 4 timbres, where each timbre has the settings for its oscillators, filters, envelopes, lfo's, effects etc. This patch can be saved on any "Program Bank" (from, Axx to Pxx) where each bank contains 16 "Programs". This gives you 16x16=256 programs where you can store your patches. When you get the Radias, its first 15 Banks are filled with the "Factory Presets", having only 16 free or "Init Programs" in Bank P. This would mean that if you want a 17th patch to be stored, you have to overwrite one of the 256.

But if you install the Radias Sound Editor, then you can load/save from/to your PC/MAC complete "Libraries" (.rdl) which will contain 256 Patches. Also you can save single patches (.rdp) on disk and load single patches into an opened library.

This means that you can administer thousands of sounds (patches) using the editor and have your 256 favourites stored on the Radias at once. There is a Factory Presets Library in the download section of this forum (besides many others) so you can overwrite what you want due the posiblity to reload the originals, just in case you want them back.

Additionally, the sound editor is a very comfortable surface to program your sounds and sending the changes in "real time" to the Radias and viceversa.

You also can load several libraries in the editor at once and drag and drop or copy patches, timbres and settings across them as you want.

The "categories" you mention are a kind of tag or variable, where you select one of the 16 available just to classify what kind of "instrument" your program (patch) represents. Its like the styles or genres in music where you can classify it as rock, disco, classic etc. The category "User" is for that cases where you don't know to what of the available categories you should assign the patch.
Besides for classification, you can select one of the categories to ease the search of determined patch: In the main menu press cursor up, then select the category with the data wheel, press cursor up again and then turning the wheel will show only the patches that match this category. This is usefull if for example you are searching for a lead sound and don't want to go thru the 256 patches.

I hope this helps!

I want to do this all in-keyboard, seeing as to how I don't have the program installed yet. But, thanks for the help!

Thats fully ok! But now you know you can overwrite the factory patches and have the option to restore the originals.

In any case I would recommend you to install and take a look to the sound editor, then it has some options and capabilities that are very hidden or dificult to see on the panel. And the libraries and patches that are downloadable are worth to take a look at!
