No pitch-bend AFTER key is released

Post by SamAndrew »

Hello all,
What I'm trying to achieve is simple and I *believe* my TR can do it:

I simply want the pitch stick (JS X+/-) NOT to affect the pitch after I release the key. I am doing pitch bends *while* playing but it's a pad/lead with a very slow decay so I need the pitch to stay constant after I release the key. This is possible right??? :\

Sure, it's possible. Release the pitch stick as you release the key, and when the pitch stick is centered, it won't affect the sound, long decay or not. There's no way to have the pitch bend only affect the notes you're currently playing (and not the decayed portions of notes you've already released), which is why bend is usually used for lead parts and not pads.

So, for what I'm looking for, you're saying it's actually *not* possible then. That's what I was afraid of...esp after I didn't see anything under the "pitch" section. :(

I have played boards that have that feature though...where the pitch wheel/stick changes the pitch *only* when you have the key(s) depressed. It's a shame the TR doesn't do this! However, I can just find a work-around way to play the part, as you were saying.

It is an interesting idea, but brings in a few questions:
what happens to the pitch of the note if you let go of it whilst the bend is active? does it snap abruptly to zero, or glide to zero at a set rate, or just stay where it is and just ignore further pitchbend movements?

I can imagine implementing the first two by enveloping the pitch bend with the filter or pitch envelope. Not sure if that is possible as I'm not at the keyboard right now...

If I remember correctly, it simply stayed where you let off on the key. For example, if you hit a note while bending down a whole step, then released the key and the pitch wheel/stick simultaneously, the pitch would stay down a whole-step instead of bending back up while it decayed.

I believe it was a Yamaha Motif that I played that had this function. Btw, does anyone know what this function would be called? "Aftertouch..." something or other, I'd guess...

Aftertouch is triggered when you change the pressure on keys you're already holding down; it's independent of pitch bend and can be used for all kinds of purposes.

I know this is possible but I'm not sure how to do it off hand. Maybe this should be posted in a new topic anyway...???
