wave shapping

Post by tarek »

i've read in article yestrday that the m3 have wave shapping ablities..wow that surprised me ..does this means that the m3 can do wave shapping the same way the wavestation works..? in which way m3 can do wave shapping ..with or without radias exb?

The M3 has per-note (polyphonic!) overdrive. This is a form of waveshaping, but I don't know if it does the same thing as the Wavestation (I'm not too familiar with the Wavestation). Probably not.

well as far as i know that the wave station uses the vector synthies method ..and i have doub that the m3 have in its eds engine this method but i think in it complex synth forums that can be generated by the exb radias can replecate in some how the vector synth ..ileave this topic to the expert guys to clear :)

The only way you can do Waveshaping on M3 is using KARMA,
KARMA can do Waveshaping but you need the KM3 Soft for that
for better controll and performance.

You'll need to purchase that from Karma Labs:

I think the terminology here is completely confusing and possibly misleading.

The Radias and EXB-Radias have waveshaping. Drive is also a form of waveshaping.

Waveshaping (wave shaping) as a feature is the ability to take a waveform and transform its shape to another shape, through some mathematical transform, for example a simple mathematical equation that turns a ramp or saw wave into a sine wave (just sin(x) I think) would introduce a very different shape to something which isn't a sawtooth - like a triangle or formant or a piano or string section. It is in effect a kind of non-linear waveform distortion.

The Wavestation, and more recently the OASYS, have vector synthesis and wave sequencing. Vector synthesis is basically fading between waves in a two-dimensional plane, e.g. with a joystick or sequenced with envelopes or some kind of playback mechanism. I think you can achieve this on the M3 too using the X-Y pad & motion feature to control the volumes of a set of timbres.

Wave sequencing is possible using KARMA on the M3 and OASYS too. Wave sequencing is where you play back different waveforms rhythmically. For example this could create a drum beat or rhythmic soundscape. You can also do this on the Radias-R rack module using its modulation step sequencer to select DWGS or PCM waveforms. I don't know if you can do that on the EXB. On the Wavestation you could have one step of a sequence fade into the next, which you can't do with the M3, Radias, or I think the OASYS.

Confusingly, sometimes a synthesis engine or a synthesizer (typically with sampling) is refered to in marketing or reviews as having a powerful engine for 'shaping waves' or a 'wave shaping ability'. What they mean here is not that it has waveshaping, but it is essentially a very programmable and flexible synthesizer with a lot of options to 'shape' your sounds.

In KORG's pure-synth synthesizers such as the MS2000, Radias, and their derivatives, there is also 'waveform modulation', such as the PWM or dual-saw phase shift. This is considered a property of the oscillator that changes the resultant wave shape, but it is not 'wave shaping' because it does not take an input wave and transform it to a different output shape, instead it adjusts the properties of the oscillator to make a new shape of waveform in the first place.

I should know, I recently built a synthesizer based on additive, vector, and wave sequencing synthesis.
