Key volume

Post by richierich »

I have sampled a new horn sound and would like to have the volume be determined by how hard I press on the key initially...much like a piano would. Soft touch, soft note...hard touch, loud note. Can't remember what its offically called...never had to program it before. Could someone tell me what its called and point me in the right direction to do it.
Thanks

Velocity is how hard you hit the keys.

you want to go to the Amp section in Program Edit mode, there should be a parameter called 'Velocity Int'.

Real instruments often respond by more than just getting louder or quieter with velocity.
Many will also get darker or brighter.

For a more expressive sound I would recommend you also try:
- lower the filter cutoff frequency to your 'minimum velocity' level.
- Then go to the Filter Mod page, and select Velocity as an AMS source, and set the corresponding AMS intensity to 100 subtract your filter cutoff value.

What you have now is, when playing very lightly the filter cutoff is lower and the sound is darker, as you play harder, the sound gets brighter approaching the full-open filter cutoff position (of 99, or 100 I think).

I'm not in front of the keyboard so the page name might not be right.
I do remember the first page is for setting the filter up - cutoff, resonance, filter type (you want low pass resonant for simplicity), the second page is for setting up keytracking and envelope amount - you don't want to set Velocity Int here (for this simple example anyway) as that controls how much of the filter envelope goes to cutoff. by default the filter envelope is all flat.
The third edit page for the filter has the assignable mod source - default to Joystick X and Aftertouch I believe. That is where you want to set one of them to Velocity and set up a positive intensity value to match how much you took off the filter cutoff on the first page.
