NO SOUND FROM PAD KONTROL WITH REAPER

Post by mancuniaman »

Hi, I have just bought a padkontrol on e-bay and am trying to get it to work with Reaper. I have downloaded the latest drivers/software etc fron the Korg website but am having trouble getting the factory pre sets to be recognised in Reaper. If anybody can assist with the settings I need, I would be extremely gratefull.
many thanks.[/b]

You do know that the padKontrol makes no sound of its own, right?

It may seem trivial to some but it does come up here more than occasionally. The padKontrol is a Kontrol product - i.e. a 'controller'. A MIDI controller to be precise.

you use it to trigger software synths or record other types of MIDI data in your sequencer.
MIDI is a language that tells synthesizers and other equipment what to do - it does not carry any sound.

Hi, yes i do know that it's a midi controller. Like I said, I have downloaded the drivers/software and installed the vst's. The problem is like i said, I cannot get it to make any sound at all. Open Reaper, load track, it recognises the padkontrol but somehow nothing happens.

I just set up a micoKontrol on Reaper - maybe it's the same process.

Have you Enabled the padKontrol under Options/Preferences/MIDI Device?

If you create a new virtual track and select an Input Device, does the padKontrol show up under "MIDI Input"?

Oops, I missed that part, sorry. Sounds like you have the padKontrol enabled. However, have you noticed that there are more than ONE padKontrol device available under Preferences/Audio/MIDI Device? The padK might be like my mK - it shows three devices, one for read/write (used by the librarian), one for Control Surface input to Reaper and the one you want - for "playing" Input to Reaper. Have you figured out which one is the right one

If you have the "playing" input enabled, then you should be able to select it in the track via MIDI Input - you should see the meter display signal input on the track when you play the pad.

If you see the meter display showing activity when you play, then you're getting MIDI messages and your problem is either with MIDI note-mapping to the VSTi you are using, or with the VSTi audio output.

thanks for the reply. i dunno what's going on here. everything seems to be connected the right way ie, software ,cables etc etc . i've downloaded drumatic 3 which somebody suggested i would need and i'm still getting no output. when i have a track armed in reaper and the padkontrol seleced as the midi device, when i hit a pad i get a red line in the trackmeter, which tells me, if i'm not wrong that a signal is going in.i've changed the out put settings to see if that makes any differance but it's still the same. also when trying to use the pk editor librarian, i geta message when trying to transmit a scene- "transmit scene data failed:midi device is not specified". this is confusing me because the pk is assigned to a track in reaper so as far as i can see, it must be recognised?.
your continued assistance is much appreciated.
many thanks.

I think the first thing that you need to do is seperate the VST issue from the pk issue. Have you EVER had a VSTi or other virtual instrument work?

If not, do a simple test.

Let's forget the things you are TRYING to get to work and get the stuff that SHOULD work with Reaper out of the box:
  • Create a New Project
    Insert/Virtual Instrument on New Track
    Pick ReaSynth
Put the cursor somewhere on the new track
    Insert/New MIDI Item
Double click on the new MIDI item - this opens the MIDI editor
Click on the piano keys. Do you hear anything?
If that works, see if the pk can trigger any of those sounds, tap on the pads. Do you hear anything? If not, make sure the track is armed, and ESPECIALLY that Record Monitoring is ON.

As for using the Librarian, all I can tell you is how mine works, perhaps you have somethign similar and you can try it:
  • Just in case, close Reaper (doesn't make a difference with my setup, but maybe it does with yours). In fact, close down ANYTHING music-related that might access MIDI to be sure.
    Open the pK Editor Librarian
Go to the menu MIDI/Set MIDI Port
Mine has an option that says, "Detect microKontrol automatically" - see if yours has something similar.
    Now try Receive Scene
