Hi Marlo,
yamaha styles are created on 16 tracks, but only 8 midi channels are used.
Ch 9 Percussion
Ch 10 Drums
Ch 11 Bass
Ch 12 Acc1
Ch 13 Acc2
Ch 14 Acc3
Ch 15 Acc4
Ch 16 Acc5

What you'll find is when you change a .sty to .mid all 16 channels are used.
For variations & fills yamaha sometimes puts the lowest note ( bass note) on a seperate track ie in an arpeggiated piano track, the C1's may well be on a seperate track from the rest of the arpeggio. It's usually pretty easy to recognize these.

Not always, but a lot of the time you'll find that track 8 midi channel 8, if it contains data, will be bass note for what's on Track 16 , midi channel 16.
7=15
6=14
5=13
4=12
3=9 ( Bass Channel)

Don't forget to swap midi channels 9 to to 11 & vice versa.
Yamaha Bass =11
Korg Bass = 9.
That's the first thing I always do.

Next you'll have to check Intro's & Endings Section

Intro A is simple, usually just a drum intro.
Intro B & C , Endings ABC may be a bit more difficult.

The may well contain 2 lots of data ie cv's for min & maj. spread over the 16 tracks.
Tracks 9 12 13 14 15 16 are usually the maj intro ending tracks, tracks 3 to 8 min tracks.
I do a a copy of the intro & ending section & paste it to the end of a the midifile. Then I delete the min tracks from the maj section & the maj tracks from the min section & the min section becomes i1cv2, i2cv2 etc.

Next I change the midi channels 3 thru to 8 to channels 9,12 to16 .

When I export a Yamaha style as a midi file. I noticed that some of the events are on weird channels sometimes channel 2,3 or 4. I think they are Accompaniment events which should be on channels 12,13,14,15 or 16. Can some one explain why.

Thanks Rikki. Pretty good pointers there.

I did swap channels 9 and 11 when I transferred the styles :)
I will also pay attention to the 3-7 channels. I actually did see a channel 2 as well and figured that it was a part of Acc1 which is on channel 12.

Hi Marlo,
the program & bank change is usually a good indicator to which channel the track actually belongs. Unfortunately the styles aren't always set up the same way. Keep an eye out for tempo changes in the intro's & endings. I normally do a copy & paste of those also, when I copy & paste the intro's & endings.

Sometimes I do get incorrect drum types playing. In Real Band & Powertracks I have the option of splitting the drum track into seperate tracks, ( ie one track per drum instrument type)I then transpose the track to correct drum type. Also handy for changing velocities.
Always handy to have a psr data list manual on hand, so that a drum type can be identified if incorrect.

One good thing, a lot of the psr styles appear to be based on cmaj7th chords for variations & fills, makes it easy to do your note transposition settings in the korg. Most of the time it's as simple as setting the tracks to Parrallel NTT iseries for variations & fills.

You can assign it manually on Korg once you load the style. Or if you know the bank and DK#, you can include it in the midi file. In fact you can even set the Expression of each CV with the MIDI file.

Filipe,
From prior posts i remember that you need to use expressions instead of volume to make it work.

If you export a midi file from your sequencer and then load it in the style record mode, your volume settings will all default back to 100. That's why you need to either set the expression levels on the keyboard, or go back to cubase and make those expression changes, and then export it again.

Pan settings are safe. Don't waste your time working on FX while in cubase. Just do the midi recording part, and save the FX part for when your midi file is loaded on the keyboard. It's a lot easier to do it this way.

well, you can still do a rough mix on cubase using expression..but don't overdo it, because when you transfer it to your keyboard, you'll end up spending some time to move things around little bit. Just make sure that the levels are close to those of factory styles. At least this is the way i do it. Be consistent with levels, so you'll have a smooth transition going from one style to another.

Hello guys,

I have importing problems also but I use logic when I record the style . I have followed the tutorial that korg has given and I have used the logic manual as well and prepared the MIDI file for export. My problem is when I import the style all my tracks that I have recorded in logic start playing on the drumkit and not where they should be say per, bass, acc1 etc.
Does anybody know what i'm doing wrong ?

This s the logic manual I used before exporting.
