Error message + Midi sync my R3 with Ableton....

Post by stuvsthekorg »

A few problems here people that id appreciate answers for....im a noob

Firstly when i downloaded the latest USB/Midi driver onto my Mac 10.6.4 with Snow Leopard i get an error message saying exactly this:

'System extension cannot be used. The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.'

I continued use anyway and when I launched Ableton i could use the R3 as an input or output, though oddly it did not show up in the available 'controller surfaces' column where all popular products are listed by model? My Korg Kontrol and Edirol show there?

My main question is:

Can i midi sync the clock from Ableton to the R3 via the USB only and not the MIDI in/out (as mentioned in the Korg brochure)? I want to sync the clock so the R3 appregiator plays in time with my ableton track without having to use MIDI cables.

Cheers STU

The USB connection is a virtual MIDI connection, so you can do everything via USB that you can via MIDI - it IS MIDI.

As for the list of controller surfaces - that is just a list of preconfigured controller surfaces that were available when that version of Ableton Live was released. They are simply 'preset' configurations.
So first of all, the R3 was probably not out when that version of Ableton was released
And 2ndly, the R3 isn't really designed as a controller surface. not to say that it can not be used as one, but it is a synthesizer and not a pure MIDI controller. So it is unlikely that they would have considered it worth making a specific controller template for it.
Doesn't stop you using the R3 as a control surface in Ableton Live.

And for synchronisation, everything you need to know is on page 67 and 68 of the Owners Manual. Specifically the sections with the headings:
Synchronizing the arpeggiator - 2. Using the external MIDI device as master and the R3 as slave (p67)
42. MIDI - Knob [4] Clock [Auto, Internal, Ext USB, Ext MIDI] (p68)
