R3 + Reason 4 = nothing

Post by Crumb »

I recently got Reason 4 under the impression that I could use my Korg R3 as a USB midi controller. I've got all the drivers installed, but Reason isn't noticing it.

I don't have one of those Midi to USB box things, either.

What am I doing wrong?

did you set as master keyboard the usb midi of your R3 in the Reason Preferences?

On Reason go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced Control>External Control>
>Bus A > and select your usb midi driver of R3 (as I see here it has usb-midi http://www.korg.com/Product.aspx?pd=279 )

Yes, I tried that. It jus says "No Midi Input". For Bus B, C, and D as well.

Same with the Keyboards and Control Surfaces. When I click the thing to detect Midi signals, it doesn't hear the signal coming from my R3.

I am at a loss.

Also did you have the R3 plugged in when you installed the drivers, and do you always use the same port for the R3? Windows drivers are finnecky about specific USB ports.

Yep yep yep, I did all that. I even reinstalled the drivers a couple of times.

This is really weird.

Also, I'm sure you probably know this but many people don't;

you know that MIDI doesn't transmit any sound, it just sends commands on what to do, what note to play, etc. correct?

...yes. I am smarter than I think.

Midi is sending signals, not sound. I DO READ MAGAZINES.

I should complain to Propellerhead.

Well no one else has the problem so I doubt it is a problem with Reason or the KORG USB-MIDI Driver.

Are you on a PC or Mac?

On the PC, you actually have to assign the KORG driver to the device using the utility in:
start > programs > KORG > USB-MIDI Driver > Install KORG USB-MIDI Device
Current Gear: Kronos 61, RADIAS-R, Volca Bass, ESX-1, microKorg, MS2000B, R3, Kaossilator Pro +, MiniKP, AX3000B, nanoKontrol, nanoPad MK II,
Other Mfgrs: Moog Sub37, Roland Boutique JX03, Novation MiniNova, Akai APC40, MOTU MIDI TimePiece 2, ART Pro VLA, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40.
Past Gear: Korg Karma, TR61, Poly800, EA-1, ER-1, ES-1, Kawai K1, Novation ReMote37SL, Boss GT-6B
Software: NI Komplete 10 Ultimate, Arturia V Collection, Ableton Live 9. Apple OSX El Capitan on 15" MacBook Pro

Might sound like a dumb suggestion, but make sure that you have the R3 both plugged in and powered on before opening up any digital work station. Most DAWs will not recognize any instruments being plugged in after the program has been started.

I'm on a PC. Made sure I had the R3 plugged in and powered up, then chose Install. Reason still doesn't recognize it.

I finally got it to work, and I have NO idea how. Thanks for all your input, though.

Shut down all running messengers

especially SKYPE - just exit it. Do not let it run when USD to Reason - esp when recording AUDIO (this is for RECORD).
