Teenage Engineering OP-1

Post by 2disbetter »

So I'm relatively new to the Synth world (been playing about a year and a half). I saw this synth device (it's a sequencer, tap deck, sampler, etc. as well) and was wondering what some of you synth experts have to say about it.

http://www.teenageengineering.com/products/op-1

The pricing has been annouced: $799

Personally I think aesthically it looks great, the functionality seems to have been thought out really well. Having meesed with synthesis for a limited time I can appreciate manipulation and the accuracy of doign so with numbers.

One of the design goals with the OP-1 is to remove all numbers and make it all graphs and knob turning.

Now I wonder if this simplifies things in such a way as to limit possibilities, or if this is just an approach difference, and shouldn't limit anything.

What do you guys think? Woudl you get one, and if so how would you plan on using it?

I'm not a synth expert, but I've had my eye on these for a while. I think they look OK (though I'm a bit weary of Ipoddishness), seems well made, have a interesting synth engine and the tape thing is potentially a terrific idea if they pull it off right. The knob thing might work fine.

I don't think I'll get one though.

My gut feeling at the moment is yes, I'd want one, but I'm just not sure it's real enough. I get too much of a toy vibe from it. In the videos I've seen of it, they demonstate mostly everything but the synth engine.

Time will tell I guess. Any other thoughts?

Seems rather overpriced... $499 is more realistic.

Yeah I agree, if it were 499 I'd consider it. I don't think its necessarily overpriced, its just they've put in too many features which aren't all that important, its also a small company. I think the product deserves the hype though, plus I just heard the video, which if thats anything to go by, its on board sounds are pretty good to my ears - I do wish it weren't white though.

I hope Teenage Engineering does well, they're a cool company. Check out their other projects if you haven't already.

I don't know, I wish the company would advertise a little more on it's actual synth capabilities, and stop showing how great of a tape deck and sequencer it is.

Also if it doesn't come with a sd card reader or some for of card reader I just can't justify that price. Specially since it's only supposed to have 512meg nand or something.
