do i need a mic preamp to connect a mic to audio in??

i connected a mic to the audio in but i can not hear the sound of the voice do i need a preamp before connecting the mic to tha audio in??

all Mics should be preamped. Think of it as tone controls for you mic. It adds volume as well as clarity and dynamics. Good Mic preamps run from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand. A really good preamp can make a cheep mic sound much better. Of course you should by a good mic for several hundred as well... GOOD LUCK Johnny G
