No sound in Cubase 5 with PadKontrol
Hi,
I have a problem, looked in a lot of places for an answer and nothing worked yet. Maybe you can help?
I don't get any sound in Cubase with my Padkontrol. This is what I did so far to get it working:
- installed the driver (latest one via the website)
- installed Editor Librarian
- connected the Padkontrol via USB to my computer, turned it on via USB (I don't have the (PC, Windows XP)
- Windows recognized it, says it's functioning properly.
So far, so good. Then...
- opened Cubase, tried to add the controller in Midi devices and Device Setup, but it's just not there.
- I tried opening different plug-ins (Groove Agent One, Battery, Kontakt, etc.), in Groove Agent I set corresponding pads, nothing works.
I don't have a clue what I'm doing wrong.
p.s. I'm using a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB Soundcard (I don't know if that's relevant in anyway)

Next, you need to go to Start > Programs > Korg > USB-MIDI Driver > Install KORG USB MIDI Devicesjaakspaak wrote: - installed the driver (latest one via the website)

This associates the Korg drivers with the PK. Before you do that, the drivers are installed just sitting on your system and Windows still chooses to use its own drivers which may not work correctly.
You shouldn't need to do anything in MIDI Devices nor Device Setup - that is mainly for disabling certain ports or setting up mixing control surfaces, or synths with a list of presets.
Once the drivers are in correctly then you should just be able to select the PK as the source MIDI port (or just select 'All Ports') for a MIDI or Instrument track and go from there.

Thanks for your quick reply!
About the last bit: By "select the PK as the source MIDI port (or just select 'All Ports') for a MIDI or Instrument track and go from there." you mean the MIDI input of a MIDI track (the same dropdown menu with the VST instruments I loaded or 'All Midi inputs')? Or am I totally looking at the wrong thing here? Because the PK is not there as an option to select.
If I'm looking at the wrong thing here, could you please tell me how to select the source MIDI port? Sorry for being such a noob at this.
Sorry, I forgot to mention I also did that directly.Next, you need to go to Start > Programs > Korg > USB-MIDI Driver > Install KORG USB MIDI Device

Yeah, thats the right place, where you have 'All MIDI Inputs' etc.
Do you have any other MIDI ports on your system? You might want to try the utility in the Korg folder to remove old MIDI ports. Due to a Windows limitation, you can only have 10 MIDI port drivers, even if they are unplugged and inactive.

No, that wasn't it (in my case).
I had to create a name for it in Cubase by creating a MIDI device in the MIDI Device Manager, then add an external instrument in the VST Connections panel and match that to the name I just created for the MIDI Device.
Very strange, but hey, it works now
Thank you for all your help!

sjaakspaak - I've been having some of the same issues. I'd like to try the last thing you mentioned here. Would you mind typing out exactly what menus you pulled down and the selections you made in the MIDI Device Manager and then how you connected it with the VST?sjaakspaak wrote:No, that wasn't it (in my case).

I'm using Cubase LE4 and wanting to use my NanoPad with EZ Drummer.
Thanks!!!

The only problem I have now is that my microphone signal isn't coming in anymore, so I've got to figure out how to get that one back now.

You shouldn't need to do any of that.
I think you just need to make sure that the port is enabled.
MIDI Device Manager is for adding synthesizers with patch lists. I will sit down in front of cubase in a minute (after lunch) and take a closer look at the MIDI configuration routine...
Your microphone probably doens't work any more because you've tied it up with expecting to be used for your MIDI Device.

Make sure 'visible' and 'In All Input' are both ticked for the MIDI ports relating to your controller.

Hey guys,
I appreciate the suggestions.
sjaakspaak - I followed your instructions. When I click on VST Connections I do not have an 'External Instruments' option. I can only control the busses in this area and don't have any other menu options. So, I get stuck at that point.
X-Trade - in the Midi Port Setup - the nanoPad is recognized and both the 'visible' and 'In 'In All Input' is toggled to active (meaning they are turned on).
I'm wondering is this just simply is an external instrument that I cannot use because I'm using the free bundled version of Cubase (I have Cubase LE4) that I got with a vocal effects processor.
I can see that the DAW recognizes the nanoPad in numerous place, but I just can't get it to control EZ Drummer at all. No sound.
I appreciate you guys taking the time to respond. I'll keep digging.
Thanks!

I really don't understand what the problem is, so I'm sorry, but 'external instrument' is not an answer.
It might have happened to solve the problem for some people, but it really should just work. I'd suggest if you can't get it to control your plugins, that you make sure it is set up to transmit the right notes and MIDI channels .etc in the editor software.
What an External Instrument is, is just a patch list and convenient shortcut of connections. Say I had my workstation or synth module connected to a specific set of MIDI and Audio ports, the 'external instrument' configuration effectively just lets you set a shortcut where you select your Workstation and its patches, rather than having to remember exactly which ports and audio sockets it is connected to.
So if it does somehow fix the problem, it is only because it has inadvertently turned something on which you've missed somewhere by using it. Not saying if you can that you shouldn't try it, to fix your problem, but you should understand that it is a messy workaround and there should be a more straightforward and proper way to get it to work.
Don't have a PK so can't help with the specifics, although I know a lot about Korg products in general, and I'm a cubase user.
