R3 USB Connection Not working?

Post by dominobrowny44 »

I haven't had trouble with connections on my R3 until recently. The R3 sound Editor doesn't recognize the driver, nor do any of my DAW's (Ableton Live, Sonar, Pro-Tools, Acoustica Mixcraft...) recognize the midi driver while connected through USB anymore. Windows does recognize it, but its not showing up in any application.

I have been able to sync my patches in the Sound Editor through a MIDI interface, but i want to go back to using the direct usb-only input.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, and software several times, through the Windows Device Manager, Control panel, and through the setup that came with the installation disc. I unplugged and replugged into different USB ports, changed the routing settings in the keyboard back and forth. I think i have tried everything possible to troubleshoot it, but i got nothing...

When you run the CPLRUN.EXE program, is your R3 listed when you press the "Devices..." button?

When you run the UnInstDrv.exe program, please post what you see for midi0 through midi9.

You must free up slots between midi0 through midi9 for the R3 midi drivers.

The cplrun.exe program is in the Korg USB-midi driver folder.

A followup to anyone having similar problems: Windows only supports ten MIDI or audio drivers at a time and if you don't always plug into the same USB connector it will make you install the same driver multiple times!!! :?

Guess what: even though Windows lets you install more than ten drivers without complaining, only the first ten will actually work. Talk about f*cked

I have no idea why this has never been fixed by Microsoft.

Thanks meatball,

I did not know this about the 10 usb connection limitation. I will run the program to check for usb connections, and see if they are all taken up. I have another piece of gear (not Korg) that will not appear properly as a drive letter once connected to the usb port of my computer... I will try this fix.

Hi chetti,

if you connect your R3 to another USB port, then you have to reassign/reinstall the driver and (if I remember well) tell the Editor again where your R3 is. The same must be done if you run the uninstall to clean the MIDi table.

ok i got it working finally, when i first used the editor for some reason i had to make windows 7 run the editor in compatibility mode windows xp, so i just took it of using the compatibility and now it works again, even tho nothing on the editor or the R3 has changed, no updates have been made since the first time i used it...

moral of the story, windows is effn stupid.

Hello!
I have a similar problem with my Korg R3
The editor does not see it midi input / output.
On the uninstal Korg R3 is listed at number 14, this is the problem, as I understand.
But how can I pick it up in the list from 0 to 9?
When I run cplrun.exe - I only see korg R3 and no device other than that..

You can't "move" a driver from one position to another. You use the uninstall driver program to remove the R3 device, then remove one of the devices from midi0-9 (check the checkbox that allows you to remove non-korg devices). Then exit the uninstall device program. Run the add Korg device program to add the R3. It will be put into the first empty space available. Run the uninstall device program again just to confirm that the R3 is between midi0-9. Run the USB-midi driver config program. You should see the R3 listed there too. Now it should work.

I found with my R3 that if I had got MIDI leads plugged into the in/out ports it would basically stop the editor recognizing it over USB, so if ever I use the editor now I disconnect the MIDI leads until I have finished using it over the USB connection.
