Radias Owner's Manual

Post by agreenberg19 »

Has anyone found an online version of the Radias Owner's Manual that has been proofread?

I have lost faith in the validity of the manual because of all the obvious errors, and in many places the grammar is horrible. This is another case of a manual that was written in Japanese and translated into pseudo-English.

I hate complaining, but a machine this complex should have been documented more accurately.

Please let me know if you find any intelligently prepared tutorials or the like.

Are you using the software editor? Everything is a lot more clear when using the editor compared to menu diving.

Personally I still prefer working from the unit itself than sitting in front of a computer. As soon as you understand the page structure and the jump keys along the bottom, its quite straightforward. I also use page jump to just slightly tweak a knob to get to the relevant page.

Anyway, what exactly do you have wrong with the manual? I think all of the actual information in it is (should be) correct, even if the grammar isn't.

The yellow smiley avatar made me have a double take for a moment there!

The only manuals I can find online are the ones in the Korg download section.

http://korg.com/SupportResults.aspx?productid=262

I guess they will be carbon copies of the printed manuals though. Take a peek anyway.

On page 21, under 'selecting programs by category', categories 10 an 11 under item 2 don't agree with the categories stored in my Radias. The manual says:

10: Acoustic
11: S.E./Hit/Drum

My Radias has:

10: Hit Drum
11: S.E.

The procedure for AUDIO IN didn't work (for me). I connected the audio outputs of my Korg PS60 to the Audio In jack and got no sound.

I guess, after seeing these 2 problems, I wondered how many more problems existed with the text.

I might be a little premature in complaining: I understand that there are some controls that affect others and don't always respond as expected based on the timbre in question. I haven't made it all the way through the user's guide yet. Staying awake after 10 pages or so is a problem. I will keep on it.

Thanks, everyone, for responding.

I took a brief look at it. I'll look closer.

Thank you.

If you still have the factory programs, O13~O16 belong to the category Audio In, providing different effects. Also in the Sound Editor under Templates/Timbre you will find 024: Audio In. Did you try this?

No. I just used the documentation in the user's manual, page 26. I ran a TS cable from the PS60 L/ MONO jack to the Radias Input 1 jack, turned up the INST volume and Volume knobs on the Radias. I played the PS60, saw the led above the 1/INST knob turn green, but there was no sound.

The manual was right. It just wasn't fully complete because the success will depend on the program that you're using. The manual says to set OSC1 to Audio IN, but there are other settings that could prevent the audio from going through, such as the Mixer level for OSC1 and the Amp envelope. The problem you had is more likely due to your inexperience with editing patches rather than a major failing of the manual, in my opinion. The fact that the LED was green meant that you were getting audio of some kind. You just need to trace the whole signal path. The diagrams on page 5 are a great help for understanding the path, so you might want to print that page and keep it at hand while you're learning.

Well, the Audio In of the Radias is intended to be used as an oscillator source going thru the entire synth chain or as formant/carrier for the vocoder and not as a sepparate input that is directly routd/mixed to the output. In the last case you will need a mixer. This is why you need to select a program from the category "Audio In". Depending on how such program is programmed, you even need to press a key to activate the synth chain and hear it at the output.

EDIT:
That is the problem of being a smoker: I GFC and when I return to complete the post xmlguy has answerd inbetween ;)

If you just want to play the audio straight through, then you probably want to look up the 'Audio In Thru' option. I think it is located in the global mode.

If you want to process the input sound, then you'll need to have a timbre with the Audio In oscillator type for oscillator 1, and the note will have to be active (you have to hold a key down). If you want it in stereo, you need to turn the voice unison mode on (unison button) - then you get two voices, one processing the left and one processing the right.

Furthermore, there are workarounds and other techniques to make audio in processing more efficient, such as setting the patch to play in mono - unless you're specifically after chord-based bandpass filtering or whatever. Using the arpeggiator on Trigger mode with latch and 100% gate to hold the note when you take your hands off the keys so sound still comes through (or use this further to create a gate pattern), or of course using the envelope follower's threshold and trigger settings to get it to trigger a note or chord automatically when the input passes a certain volume threshold.

Just when I get really good suggestions from you guys, my Macbook's display went south: i.e. I can see a dim outline of the screen contents when I hold it up to direct sun, but when it is on my desk, it looks completely black. The display output is normal when I connect the Mac to an external monitor, but I guess I am putting off the inevitable by not getting the Mac fixed. The apple store in Charleston has a bad rep so I am heading to Best Buy.

Thanks for your help!

GOOD NEWS!! (using my external monitor), Programs O15 and O16 work fine. Panel controls like filter cutoff, amp and EQ all work to spec.

thanks for your help and suggestions.
