Memory Stick Recognition
I am having trouble with the M3 not recognizing that a memory stick is in the USB slot upon start up. I need to pull it out and reinsert it for it to see that it is there.
The M3 recognizes the Korg M3 Expanded memory stick right away and will auto-load the EXPCM03 (or whatever) as expected upon start-up, but my other USB stick with samples, songs, etc. saved on it is not recognized - even if I hit the "Scan USB" button on the touch screen. I have tried formatting the USB from the M3, but the problem remains. I always need to remove the stick and put it back in before it will "see" it.
It makes no difference if I have one stick or both in the machine. It will always recognize the Korg stick, and never recognize my other one upon start-up.
Any ideas? Do I just have a funky USB stick?
Thanks for your thoughts,

Re: Memory Stick Recognition
I have one that the M3 doesn't like too (4GB Kingston mini). It works fine in my Fantom G and XS6, but the M3 refuses to acknowledge it.Muji wrote:It makes no difference if I have one stick or both in the machine. Which USB sticks are good?
Can you guys help me by telling me which USB sticks that you know are recognized by the M3 upon startup? I'll buy another one, but don't want to go through a trial-and-error process if I can help it.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Purely speculation on my part, but...
Some (most) stock USB's come with underlying "explorer" software, which usually pulls up not only your files, but also some bundled software or site links... games or an encyclopedia or protection suites. Even if you get rid of everything else, file-wise, the structure remains.
I'd bet that because M3's not a computer the in-out routine disengages some underlying software infrastructure that the M3 won't read because it can't make it work internally on power-up, not having a "real" computer OS.
I'd also bet that a "Korg-branded" USB has nothing there - or more likely that they have a Korg proprietary USB structure, and that you can't re-write that new structure onto a generic USB chip.
I'd be interested to know myself, if that's truly the case. But if the Korg USB's 10 times (or more) as expensive than the Kingston, I'll put up with the annoyance and take my wife to dinner on the difference.

I see. So you're saying this is a common problem and that most USBs are not recognized, ...and I should just deal with it?
I'm okay with that if it is true, but if I can just pick up a cheap USB and have it work well, then I'd like to do that.
... then still go have dinner with the wife (my wife, that is).

I'd rather not say problem, just that they're unrecognized at boot-up / power-on as a standard precaution -- it's not like they crash your system or data disappears with non-Korg USBs.
I've had no issues actually using a variety of USB (including Kingston 1 & 2 gig) keys even when non-PCG files (like windows .doc and .xls) are also present on the data key. The Korg just ignores them, as it appears to ignore the bundled stuff native to the particular USB you are using.
