wavestation SR multitimbral?

Post by rawrooo »

hello all!
im thinking of buying a wavestation SR. ive also got an ms2000, a roland JP8080, a yamaha qy700 and an M1rEX. there's something im not understanding about the SR-

i understand that the wavestation SR can do 16 parts multitimbrally. but ive read that, practically, it doesnt really get 16 parts at once - that youd probably end up using it more as a mono-timbral module.

i was expecting, for instance, that the m1rex would be 8 parts multi timbral. which it is really! but im finding that the way it shares the effects for all the parts when in SEQ mode changes the sound of the patches too much from how they sound in PROG mode to be useful. although i LOVE LOVE LOVE the sounds as they are in PROG mode, so im dealing with it!

is the WS SR's multi timbral thing kinda like that? or is it a polyphony thing? can anyone who is familiar with the WS SR please comment?

You are right - its a compromise.

While its TRUE you could play 16 parts, playing 2 notes at a time on one of them would reduce that to 14+[1 playing 2] and so on.

Playing comp chords would take up 4 to 6, sustain, 4 to 6, mono bass 1, drums 1 --- that would be a safer playing and more realistic use of the SR.

My advice, for what t's worth is to get the SR for the individual sounds with the specific purpose of using them individually -- if you can work out multi-timbral play, well, thats a bonus.

For the other end of the spectrum, look for a high polyphony, GM-style module -- Motif Rack (original), Triton Rack or Trinity TR, or Roland 5050.
