Hi Humberto,

I am going to sell my Radias Keyboard (without the Synth Rack) but I think the shipping costs to Brazil will be around 60 EUR (+ eventual import taxes in Brazil?).
If you are interested, please let me know so I ask what are the real shipping costs.

hi axxim,

could you please link the auction in here if it's still on please?
if it's not, i also would be interested in buying one (shipping from EU pref.)
..also, if anyone could just tell me what is the official name (product code) for the keyboard only item, I would be very greatful.

thanks,

Sorry, but the auction ended Sunday 20th. My DSL went down for the entire weekend so I couldn't even see how the ending was. FYI, the keyboard was sold for 211 EUR + shipping.

Unless you are fixed to have the Radias KB due to its design compatibility, you may consider te possibility of buying an used KB-synth which also offers aftertouch and you get an additional sound engine. I was thinking seriously to go for an Alpha-Juno again, which I had long time ago, even if it hasn't aftertouch. Now I got the VP-770 and it works quite fine. The only drawback is the modulation stick instead of the wheel, that returns to its original position but I can live with that for now.

That darn Radias Keyboard...

Post by acemonvw »

Does anyone have any good ideas on what to do with the Radias Module? I haven't yet picked mine up, but I'm tempted to just use a second tier on a keyboard stand to just prop it up. I'd buy the keyboard but it rarely seems to go on sale, and doesn't seem worth the >$300 price.

I guess my question is, what does everyone without the specific keyboard do with the module?

Thanks!

Edit: I didn't want to downplay Axxim's suggestion of a KB-synth (I presume you were talking about the Access Virus KB?). That was over $1k and didn't seem to have a seat for the module either.

I think he just means a keyboard synth i.e. any synth with keys, and use it to play the Radias module

Yes you are right. I was thinking of such used synths like Alesis QS, a lot of Rolands D?, Yamahas, Kawais or similar that go for about the same price like the Radias KB and have a similar quality keyboard, maybe with aftertouch. The last I would consider as a keyboard to drive my Radias is a Virus, because they are overpriced in my opinion.
The VP-770 was one in my wishlist not for the KB but for the vocoder itself. But as it has a good KB and I have no place for more KBs I thought it is better to sell the Radias KB instead of have it damned to get dusty in my cellar like my Roland S50

My RADIAS-R sits on the top tier of a keyboard stand. Below that is whatever I use to control it. Typically now a Korg workstation - the KARMA workstation. Before that I've used a Yamaha QS300, Evolution MK361-C, and a Kawai K1. Anything with keys really - the more the better. And aftertouch really brings the Radias alive - by default mod source MIDI5 is aftertouch, and a lot of my patches use it. Radias own keybed is only 49 keys (not enough) and has no aftertouch.

Radias keybed doesnt even have aftertouch?
thank god i got the rack only...

if i were OP ide just get a karma for 500 bux, probably not to far off on what youd pay for the keyboard only for radias.
you get more control, setting different zones and velocity levels for different midi channels without setting those from the radias itself (radias cant even do velocity switching... but with the karma you will be able to do that)

Thanks everyone (my first post [well, this is my second] and I have to say this seems like an awesome community).

I had recently bought a controller for garageband/logic, the keystation pro 88. Alas, it does not have aftertouch (as X-Trade said would be nice). I was planning on using it as my MIDI controller for the radias. Perhaps I'll just have to save up for the Korg KARMA (looks like a nifty workstation... though does one really need a workstation if they use garageband or logic?)

I appreciate everyone's comments!

Another question, what do you guys think of something like the M-Audio Venom as a controller. It would add it's own set of sounds, and is a fairly recent addition to the synth world...

Yes the KARMA is a workstation but it comes into a world of its own because of the KARMA technology in it - sounds wise it is essentially a Triton which is useful because there is a wealth of classic sounds, and the Triton was one of Korg's most popular workstation lines ever.
The 'KARMA' technology is an kind of advanced 'arpeggiator' in steroids. It can do simple things like basic MIDI transformation, strumming, MIDI LFOs etc, right through to providing you with a set of grooves which react to what you play. Its all about realtime generated stuff, and you can tweak those with the knobs which makes it great for electronic music.

Although its not for everyone. Really my advice is just to get a Korg workstation, or an (at least) 61 key MIDI keyboard.
Even if you just set up the workstation as a controller, you'll get some nifty features to add. If you're working in a DAW you won't need the sequencer, but then many people still use workstations even though they don't want the sequencer. They just provide nice pianos and string sections and all those non-synthesizer sounds quite well. As well as some pretty nice pads.

Again, it doesn't HAVE to be a KARMA, or even a workstation. My criteria would simply be:
-Aftertouch
-at least 61 keys
-preferably a three-controller joystick (AFAIK found only on the Korg workstations) or perhaps a breath controller or 2nd modwheel or something along those lines.

What this website needs is a "Thank you" button next to posts... So, thank you for the information. I'll look into a Karma in a few months (I've just spent over a $1000 on different synths and controllers, not really knowing much about aftertouch until recently). Thanks!
