Recording on M50 Sequencer and Output Questions

Post by korgman2011 »

Hello to all,

I posted this before, but i have made some modifications since I bought a diferent synth than the one i was going to get before.

I am curious about how I would go about recording this certain setup in my m50 sequencer:

Let's say i want to record 3 internal sounds from my m50 and also 3 external sounds from another keyboard. Can this be done?

For example... I just bought a used Roland JP-8080 module.

I would want to do something similar to this...record on :

Track 1 - M50 drums
Track 2 - Roland Bass
Track 3 - M50 Lead
Track 4 - Roland Strings
Track 5 - Roland pad
Track 6 - M50 guitar

I am not to familiar with all this midi stuff...I understand about setting the channels up to the same number. I found out that the JP is only 2 parts timberal...i am guessing that means that I can only trigger 2 sounds from the JP to be able to record on the M50 sequencer? can i still somehow record the 3 sounds i have used as the example above, or do i have to have a multitimberal keyboard with more parts in order to do what i want above? For example, there is a used Roland D-50 that is being sold...i like that keyboard...if I buy it, that keyboard is multitimberal and I would be able to do what i want?

I know i have to conect M50 out to Roland In in the midi ports. I have an idea that in the sequencer mode, in midi parameters, you have to set External to the same channels on the other keyboard.

Another situation that i am not sure if i am doing right or if it can't be done is related to the output of the sounds.

In the M50, you record a sound and play it back and you can here what you played...but when i connect my sampler and record a phrase... i can not hear what i recorded...the only way i can hear it is sending the sampler thru an external mixer and raising the volume on the sampler. Is this the only way of hearing external sounds? or can i to set up something in the M50 so i can hear the sound thru the M50 output?

So in other words, now that I have the JP and the sampler...does that mean that i have to have both those synths outputing thru a mixer in order to hear the sounds? I hope there is a convinient way of being able to hear the sounds thru the M50.

Any help would be greatly appreciated....... I live in South America and most of the music salesmen do not know too much about midi.

Hello, korgman2011!
you can not hear any sounds through M50. you can not do it through midi with any synth, understand? sorry, but it's not easy to understand your problem.

imho, you can use M50 sequencer to record (midi) all six tracks. then record the output of your M50 (for M50 sounds/tracks).
for recording jp8080 sounds you should connect m50's midi out to 8080's midi in and record rolands audio, two tracks: you are able to record two timbral track with 2 midi channels (those, you recorded 8080's parts in M50 on, assign these channels for your split or whatever in 8080), and then do the same with the last midi channel / rolands patch.

so you'll get three audiotracks, that you can mix in a song with some kind of software, i guess.
hope it'll be helpful and enjoy M50!

What MIDI does it send messages along the lines of:
"play this note at this velocity"
"stop playing that note"
"that controller has changed to this value"
"the pitchbend has been moved by so much"
"change to this program number"
etc.

It doesn't actually carry any sound. You are not recording sound, just the instructions to make the sound again. Just like if you write sheet music.
That's why you can 'record' a phrase on the M50, then decide you don't like that piano sound and chose a new one and it will still play the same, but with a different sound.

Aside from that, you've got the right idea. If the JP8080 only plays two timbres then you'll only get two timbres out of it. If you set those two timbres to different MIDI channels, then you can set two tracks on the M50's sequencer to EXT(ernal) mode and set their MIDI channels respectively.
By default the M50 will transmit its mixer level and program number out on those channels too - so you can chose the program number like you would on any other internal program, and it will send that number (0-127) to that timbre on the receiving synth every time you start the sequencer. You can turn this off by filtering out patch change messages in the track's MIDI filter page. Similarly turn off 'other CCs' I think if you don't want the mixer level and pan to be transmitted.
