My Keyboard Genealogy-What is yours
Gibson Organ from the 60's - sold for a
Farfisa double keyboard - then added a
Rhodes, then sold the Farfisa and added a
Hammond M3 with Leaslie (a pain to move for gigs), sold Rhodes and Hammond and added a
Yamaha DX7, traded in for a
Yamaha Motif ES8
Last year sold Yamaha ES8 and got the Korg M3 88
Heard the Kronos was coming out and sold the M3 as I wanted to get a high price for the M3 as I thought the prices might drop on the M3 if I waited until the Kronos came out.
Placed an order for the Kronos..unfortunately I sold the M3 too early as the Kronos is coming out much later than I originally thought.
Now I have to wait with no keyboard....big mistake not having a keyboard in the mean time. Hope it comes in May and not June.

I don't have much of a list ...
1986 - Roland Alpha Juno 2
2002 - Yamaha P120 Digital Piano
In 1990 I added a Roland SoundCanvas SC55. And since then I have been using both of the above, along with an M-Audio Axiom 61 to control software instruments including Native Instruments Kore and Kontact, along with Propellerhead's Reason and Record. I am very tired of software instruments. I am very much looking forward to having a single instrument with all of the sounds and functions that I need. I do plan to use the digital piano with the Kronos, so I have ordered the 61 key synth action version.

1966 piano and spanish guitar
1970 ca. farfisa organ with various guitar pedals, gibson sg electric guitar
1972 ca. farfisa, custom made mono synth, Elka electric piano with guitar pedals...
1975 ditched guitar for good, went 100% into synthesizers.
[a whole life went by: 36 years, from Ensoniq to Moog to EMU to ARP to Rhodes to OSCar to SCI to... you name it. I totally missed: wurlitzer pianos (I used organs) and hammond organs]
2011: read my signature.
2012: sitting on a little pile of cash, waiting for Korg, Yammy and Roland to serve me. hard to amaze me, I'd rather be served.
Need just some decent physical modeling of EPs and winds, otherwise I feel satisfied.

I had posted something on my band's site around the time I pre-ordered the Kronos, so I'll just copy it here. It's my Korg keyboard history. I'll be interested to see if anyone shares my opinion of the Triton.
M1:
They had one at school in '93 and it simply smoked my own Yamaha SY-35 in most ways (and the Roland JVs that the school had). Though most of the sounds were bathed in effects, I was totally captivated by Korg sounds. I never actually got one, though I do now have the Legacy software version (which is even better with a resonant filter and all the M and T-series PCM cards ever made).
Poly 800:
I borrowed one of these for a week from my sister's friend. It had such a fat sound compared to my SY-35 that I knew I needed to get one (or something similar), especially since I was into writing trance techno at the time. In fact, I ended up doing one better...
DW-8000:
This keyboard got me into programming traditional analog filtered sounds for cheap back in the day, and playing mono leads (with a wah pedal, of course!). It could even make an okay organ patch with fast/slow rotary emulation on the LFOs. It's very cool but not a complete synth by today's standards (somewhat of a one-trick pony).
Trinity:
My all-time favorite keyboard, with super-awesome leads and synth sounds. Monster lead, baby! However, the pianos are poor and the organs are only made okay by the great effects processing. For anyone that cares, I wah on the floor, not the stick.
Trinity V3:
Added a cool analog modeling mode...Okay, THIS is my all-time favorite keyboard! This is the synth (not piano) on the first album and I should have never sold this gorgeous instrument.
Trinity Pro:
I simply hate looking at 76 keys E to G. Make them A to C like an acoustic piano! In other words, why did the Rhodes format win over the Wurlitzer format?
Triton:
I never got an original Triton because it completely lacked the Trinity's mojo when I played it in the store. One theory is that the filter algorithms weren't as good in order to preserve processing power for more polyphony and effects. Whatever, it sounded sterile.
Triton Studio 61:
Way more features than my past Trinities, but the sounds where only marginally better. It also still lacked a certain magic of the Trinity. This made the majority of the second album's synth sounds, though, and did a nice job at it. It has enough polyphony and killer effects to make a decent organ out of sine waves.
TR88:
Though it's based on the Triton LE, it actually had a very playable piano -- if you didn't run out of polyphony -- that is supposedly a cut-down version of the Oasys piano. The other sounds were not as good as the Triton Studio (and weren't really meant to be). I sold this to get the M3.
M3-73 Xpanded:
Another major upgrade in features and again only an incremental improvement in sound (especially on "bread and butter" patches like pianos and organs). They made a few additional piano multi-samples but were all largely disappointing and mushy to me. I just didn't see it as the total package worth spending days or weeks on trying to replicate my Trinity and Triton sounds. If it had Korg's excellent analog and organ modeling integrated into the regular sound banks, I would've kept it, learned Karma and tolerated the pianos for live use.
MicroX:
Another Triton LE derivative, this time with an emphasis on contemporary sounds suitable for electronic music (which, admittedly, makes for interesting ideas for other styles). The only piano sample is garbage. Ultra-portable, it's narrow width is equaled by it's narrow sound and narrow playability. I probably won't keep this thing.
Trinity TR Rack:
I finally have Trinity sounds back in my rig. This won't go anywhere unless Korg makes a Trinity plug-in.
Kronos 61:
This has all of the requisite elements: ROMpling, sampling and several forms of modeling including clonewheels in a modern workstation format. Hell, it's even lighter than Korg's past workstations. I really hope the piano is enjoyable to play. It talks the talk...let's see if it can walk the walk!

I don't have the timeline, it's so much in such a short time.
Started of with:
XP-30 + Novation Supernova II Rack 24 voice (upgraded to 48 voice).
Added Novation KS5.
XP-30 was something I picked up to get introduced into the synth world,
I certainly got the wrong Keyboard.
NSII got me into Analog synthesis. Good synth for learning.
Exchanged NSII Rack with a keyboard version.
Sold Novation KS5 and XP-30
Got Nord Modular G2X.
Sold SNII, got Prophet 08.
Sold Prophet 08, got Moog LP.
Got Motif ES Rack, Access Virus TI Polar
Sold Modular G2X, Got Nord Wave.
"Nord Wave is my Synth life's best sounding Synth."
Sold everything
Got Yamaha SY77 and Yamaha DX7II FD with grey matter E! And got Virus TI2 desktop and a Novation keyboard Kontroller.
Sold everything.
Wait?! What have I done?!
Hoping to settle down with a Kronos, or a Yamaha Motif XF if kronos is too expensive.
I'm dreaming about Yamaha making a FM based Flagship synth, with sample and VA abilities with a huge gorgeous looking control surface. And built like a tank, 73 weighted keys, Total Integration Audio/Midi-USB, 16 parts multitimbral and endless polyphony. I hope it will happen soon, and it would be a choice over Kronos.

I'm not sure if by genealogy you mean keyboards sold to buy other keyboards. In over 30 years I think only ever sold one. (I'd like to sell more but I guess I'm too lazy.) So I'm not sure I qualify to answer the question. But my history roughly in order bought is:
First electric keyboard bought around 1976 or 77, I guess it was called a CDX organ.
Hammond M2 (sold a long time ago)
Yamaha CP20
Yamaha SK20
Moog Source
Korg DSS-1
Kurzweil K2000
Korg EX-8000
Yamaha TX81Z
Moog Minimoog
Kurzweil PC88mx
Yamaha S90ES
Hammond XK-3c
Kurzweil ME-1
I'm expecting to buy a Kronos 88, but after I try one.

in 1993 i was 14 and started with a Roland MT-32 and PC-7 keyboard controller for sequencing on the VERY FIRST version of Cakewalk... it all started there. This was before Windows 95... it was more like Windows 85... exept it was all ASCII
|
Roland SC-7 sound module (1994) - the display was a single LED that lit up when it received MIDI data, 1 control (master volume) 128 GM sounds, 2 static effects processors, no RAM to speak of, the ugliest, gnarliest string sounds imaginable, but it was the soul-of-simplicity
|
Korg X5DR sound module (1995) - OMG a display! buttons! let alone all the programmable stuff inside - i was in heaven.
|
Korg N364 Music Workstation (1997) - got a TON of use out of this one, all the way through college

Think I've almost been through every ROMpler weight class over the past 18 years... except the one OASYS is in, but that's coming. It's more than obvious I've gravitated to Korg, but I fell in love with the sound back in the 90's, and I'm too lazy to learn anything else!

I've been through a massive amount of gear over the years..the first ever device being a Korg Polysix
some of the equipment I have bought damaged or partially non working and restored them and sold them on for profit, the thing with second hand Hardware is that you can buy it and try it out for little money these days and still either break even or make money when you sell it on if you don't like it,certainly a korg freak, used and abused a lot of Korg stuff over the years

some of the equipment I have bought damaged or partially non working and restored them and sold them on for profit, the thing with second hand Hardware is that you can buy it and try it out for little money these days and still either break even or make money when you sell it on if you don't like it,certainly a korg freak, used and abused a lot of Korg stuff over the years

I don't. I love my Triton Pro and bought it new with all expansion options same day. Up until the Kronos being announced, I owned 2 configured identically. I can get patches out of the Triton I can't get out of anything else. I created a piano patch using stock samples and the EXB-PCM08 .pcg file that I still prefer over my M3 or M50 in a live setting. The filters seem more aggressive and the keybed is still my favorite of all synths. On other forums it's popular to rip on the Triton and I could care less. I'm selling my M3 for the Kronos. I'm not selling the Triton. Never will. At worst, it'll still be the best controller I could get.Zeroesque wrote: I'll be interested to see if anyone shares my opinion of the Triton.
This guy feels the same way (and you can see him and his Triton every night on the Jimmy Fallon show):

I also disagree LARGELY on your assessment of the DW-8000. I'd take that over a DX7 any day of the week.
