To plug your head phones into the r3 you just need

R3>adapter>headphones

that would work perfectly.

Don't worry about everything else people are talking about, that can be done later when and if you decide to record/produce something. Just buy that adapter and have fun playing the synth for now.

What you need to buy depends on what you need to do. If you only need to hear the synth while you're playing, then sure, you can use an adapter plugs to hookup powered speakers or headphones to the R3. If you plan to record what you play on the computer, then that's where the Fast track pro is useful. Nobody here wants you to buy more than what you need. The R3 has very good audio quality, so having good headphones and/or speakers are necessary to hear what it can really do. Those Sony headphones should be fine for hearing it. So, you might want to save up for other things you might need in the future too.

So you just want a synth, so you can play it with headphones.

Tell me, after you learn how to play the Enter Shikari songs you want to know, what will you do? Go touring in an Enter Shikari cover band? Learn how to play other bands songs? Become a keyboardist?

Or have you not thought that far, and just thought you wanted a synth to cover Enter Shikari for your own private entertainment?

Because if you only get it setup for headphone usage that's just what'll happen, you won't be able to use it for anything else.

Just to remind you i am only 14. I dont have a job therefore i dont have the money. I know its unlikely but i wouldnt mind becoming a music producer. But atm i want to learn the synth and as i get the money and equipment i will start recording etc

Its just atm moment with the money i have i think i should start with learning an important instrument in the musical world

what do you think?

And I started when I was.... 16, maybe 15 I think? I don't even remember XD

I know money's hard to come by. Wine to mom and dad for cash. Abuse birthdays and holidays. Become a marij- err, nvm, you're probably a freshman.

If you want to produce, headphones won't cut it. Xmlguy is right that in using the computer's built in inputs you'll get lesser quality sound. However, it's better than nothing and there's free programs like audacity for recording. Go with my cable setup so you can eventually try composing.

Start with korg and head phones and soon get cables then ill get that Box thing and do it better

and as for your wine to parents thing they are pretty strict about money haha but ill try anyway

The USB is for the R3's built in USB-MIDI. You can connect to your R3 to a computer with it, and either have the computer sequence your R3 (you right music on your computer and it plays it for you on the R3) or you can use the R3's keyboard to play computer instruments.

I suggest that you download the free Synth1 VST and a free VST host program. That way you can start learning synthesis without spending any money. Synth1 is very powerful, considering it's free. I would've mowed lawns for a whole summer when I was 14 to get something as powerful as Synth1, but that was long before you were born, in the age where there were no software synthesizers, much less good free ones.

You can get free versions of Ableton Live or Cubase when you buy certain products, and you can do a lot of stuff with them to learn how to build tracks. I remember the time before I graduated high school, when money was hard to come by, so I think it's worth exploring all the free or cheap options before spending so much on hardware. It will also help you make a better decision when you do buy the hardware, because you'll know more about what's important for the music you want to make.

The iPad/iPad2 has become a really good option for music too. There's so many great synth apps for it that are cheap, once you pay for the iPad itself, of course.

haha yeah ive got the fl studio demo and have been playing with it for a while dont think its much use with out a midi though. And ive seen ableton on youtube and it looks MUCH better to me

as for money im washing cars and mowing things now but im 15 in september so i can get a job

What is your keyboard/mouse plugged in to? is it a round hole? or a rectangular one?

USB is a rectangular socket (a really stupid design. There is a reason almost every other connector in computer history is asymmetrical).

Most modern PCs will have four or eight slots (at the back). Most laptops will have anywhere between two or six depending on the design and age.

is the same as normal USB. It's just a different shape, because it prefers an R3s hole to a PCs.
